I've played Fantasy for years and my twin brother has been playing 40k for years and he was keen to get me again for old times sake. So I picked up the IG book (I thought they were called Imperial Guard but I guess not ) and some paints for the scheme I'm planning. Now what type of IG list is currently strong in the meta. Something around guardsmen supported by 'platoons' of tanks? or tank spam? I'm not asking for a pre-made list just what type of army to make .

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Guard have a lot of variety in their lists now, all sorts can be good. You can run infantry hordes that charge across the field brimming with special weapons, supported by artillery. You can run armoured columns with a Tank Commander, Russes, Hellhounds and Veterans in Chimera. You can run a tank-and-blob gunline, or a vet gunline with cheap Carapace armour.
Basically, anything goes, so pick a style you like and roll with it.

There's a lot of choice with IG.
Throw formations in there, and you can have:
Tanks with tank support and a tank HQ.
Infantry blobs,
Veterans in chimerae, tauroxes and both types of flier,
Ogryn meatshields with tanks or troops following them,
Tempestus platoons in transports or deep-strike,
and on it goes.
If you have a lot of troops, look at fortifications. The trench network in the Stronghold Assault book is ideal for Infantry and HWTs.
If you have seen an army or play-style, the IG/AM codex usually has a way of doing it. Most have ways of being optimised for play against your meta.
