Subject: Are Hive Tyrants really that weak against a Gorkanaut?

Last night I played my orks against a new tyranid player. At one point he assaulted my gorkanaut with two hive tyrants. One with 4 Scything Claws and wings and another with some sort of S6 cannon and wings. After he started the assault we figured out that he could not even scratch the gorkanaut and I proceeded to make two tyrant pancakes. I feel bad for the guy so I wanted to find out if we missed something there as I don't know anything about tyranids. Are tyrants really that bad or did we miss some magical ability in close combat for them?

They would need to smash, and then hope to hit. They use to be really strong at taking down vehicles, but smash has been limited to 1 attack when you use the active affect.
So, his best bet would be to use range attacks and try to ignore CC with a gorkanaut. Especially since it has a Str 10 melee weapon.

You should read the Smash special rule.
They still would've lost the combat (more than likely), but they can definitely scratch it.

Yeah, the Tyranid player was foolish to even try. And flying assault Tyrants is an awful idea as well. The point of flight is to zoom around, which means they have to shoot. An assault Tyrant needs guards with rending claws to lay on the attacks. The Carnifex with crushing claws is the CC unit to handle Gorkanauts. Tyrants can slaughter infantry and other MCs, but not vehicles, not in the assault.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that while smash looks like it could have given him something it is kind of the same as me trying to kill his tyrant with my grots. Sure it could happen (ha ha ha love dem grots) but not a good strategy. I will let him know what you guys said and hopefully he can rethink his strategy.

A CC flyrant does have place and a role in a Nid army... but still should not be attacking an AV13 walker.... that is suicidal.
