Subject: N42 or N52 magnets?

hi all, I've been looking into magnetising terminators and tactical marines but not sure which strength to use as I've seen people use both strengths but not explain why or how reliable their choice was. Do any of you guys have experience in magnetising with different strengths and know which one is better? Also are 2mmx1mm strong enough for the termies or do i need to get 3mmx1mm? Cheers LS40k

I usually get N52 but a lower strength should be fine if you can get a good deal on them. When it comes to size I'd use the largest size that will fit. I've never done termies, but I used N52 2x1mm on my scouts force. Gave a strong bond and just fit the arms perfectly.
Only PIC I have but I think you can see it okay.

ok, thanks for the reply and pics, i was thinking going for the stronger set as it's probably not too strong and it's better being stronger than weaker.
cheers

I'd agree with that line of thinking - stronger magnets is best as it gives a much more reliable seal; in this range of magnets you won't get anything that is so strong that they won't separate with a small tug (at least through normal commercial channels; there might be some super strong super expensive tiny magnets out there).

The bond is actually quite strong. You can pick up the model by the arm and mini will come right with it. You can even shake it a certain degree without it coming loose. You'd definitely need to pull very quickly or either slide it off at an angle or hold the model's body to get the magnetized arm off. More than enough strength for the intended use.

ALWAYS use N52s!
The difference is staggering. I got a bunch of N42s on the cheap after having used N52s in the past. I regretted it... I gouged out the N42s and went with N52s, which meant I had to do a lot of greenstuffing. I will never use anything but the strongest magnet possible. If there was something stronger than N52, I'd use it. I just don't know of anything stronger.
