I'm slightely obsessed with A Song of Ice and Fire also known as Game of Thrones and I've been noticing connections between 40k characters and characters in ASoIaF/GoT such as...
Kaldor Draigo - Khal Drogo (both warriors and leaders)
Huron Blackheart - Euron Greyjoy (both pirates)
Vargard Obyron - Oberyn Martell (both use spears/scythes very well and represent their leaders)
What do you think of these, and have you picked up on any other references to/influences from other fiction in 40k?
Lets try to avoid plot spoilers though

"If you can't keep up, go and join the Death Guard"
"It had often been said that Space Marines knew no fear, but when Angron charged, he ran" |

Most 40k fluff connections are to *WAY* older material, Huron actually dates back to the early 90's.
There's tons of references and visual inspirations from stuff like Judge Dredd, Dune, Heavy Metal, Starship Troopers, Aliens, etc

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

I know part of the HH series pays homage to Rendezvous With Rama, in the part where they assault the cylindrical alien ship. Not sure if anyone else caught that as some of these referenced are from very old science fiction.

As Vaktathi said, all of these things are simply coincidental.
Not that I don't think that 40K writers don't also read GRRM's novels (he writes more than SoIaF), but, in most cases, if 40K is inspired by/influenced by another source, there's a nod to it, or they bear some sort of similarity.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

I'm convinced that the Imperial Knights in the present form are inspired somewhat by GoT.
not directly copied but I definatly got some vibes from the Imperial Knight Novella. I mean... they actually have a scene where two knights are issued orders, Sir Gregor, and Sir Martin (they both apparently die )

Kaldor Draigo - Khal Drogo (both warriors and leaders)
Bleah, I like the idea of this thread, and when I first read GoT I thought it was funny how close the names Kalgor Draigo and Khal Drogo, but honestly, they are nothing a like. Sure they are "both warriors and leaders" but in these two universes that is such a common thing. Kaldor Draigo is a knight under a sispeian task while Drogo is a warlike leader of a nomadic tribe.
I really dislike these faint connections. With this logic then Kaldor Draigo = Eddard Stark, Robert Baratheon, Marnues Calgar, etc. Automatically Appended Next Post: Macharius. wrote:Yeh, if you look hard enough and long enough, you can draw parallels to pretty much anything. So yea pretty much this.
Though, I did note the sudden emphasis of houses in the Imperial Knight Codex.

I would think that it's more likely that both GW and GRRM are drawing on the same inspiration - medieval French and British history - when it comes to the idea and depiction of knights ( IIRC, the GoT series began as "The Wars of the Roses, with dragons").
Also, just bcause there's a possible reference in a character's name, doesn't mean it goes any deeper.
Desubot, I doubt that. I'm sure the writers will admit to taking inspiration from other sources. Everyone does. The end product is a different matter.

If you go back to the original IK fluff (from the late 80's I think?) there was a strong emphasis on houses back then as well.
They obviously expanded it a lot as they had to go much more in depth to write a whole damned codex on them, but the houses were always a large art of Imperial Knights.

I have emailed GW about this use of the word houses. GRRM will shortly get a cease and desist. Alan Merritt has personally attested to the fact that GW independently came up with the word in question during a meeting in the early eighties.

Marbo is blatantly Sean Bean. Uber awsome warrior who dies in every battle then comes back as another hero to boss the enemy all over again, before being run off a cliff by a herd of cows... definitely Marbo! Automatically Appended Next Post: In fact, isnt Sean Bean intellectual property of GW too? They definitely have a model of him in their LotR collection...
