Alright I am brand new to tyranids, but here is what I was thinking. I wanted to do a mix of swarm and nidzilla, and here is what I came up with.

HQ:

Hive Tyrant (240)
Wings
2 TL Devourers
Electroshock Grubs

ELITES:

Zoanthrope (50)

Venomthrope (45)

Venomthrope (45)

TROOPS:

20 Hormagaunts (100)

20 Termagants (80)

3 Ripper Swarms (45)
Deepstrike

FAST ATTACK:

Hive Crone (155)

20 Gargoyles (120)

HEAVY SUPPORT:

2 Carnifex (300)
TL Devourers

LIVING ARTILLERY:

3 Warriors (100)
Venom Cannon

Exocrine (170)

3 Biovores (120)

Comes to about 1,570, so I would need to shave some off.

My plan was to sort of bubble wrap the big bugs with the smaller ones to be able to get in range for everything.

Keep in mind all I have is the codex so anything can be changed, and I am open to suggestions.

Also, malanthropes. These seem to be the talk of the town when it comes to tyranids as of recently. Are they worth it over the zoanthrope and venomthrope? I don't have IA 4 and it would cost me a penny to invest in malanthropes as I am in the states, but i was just curious.

I would shave evenly from Termagants, Hormagaunts and Gargoyles. Or you could cut one entirely and beef up the other two. My personal choice would be to cut the Hormagaunts here.

Does not look bad. You can trim easy, I'd just drop 4 Hormagaunts and call it good. Malanthropes really do seem to be "all that" But are not mandatory ... If you have not purchased anything yet, take a hard look at getting two Winged Tyrants, you can trim the Crone, and 10 Gargoyles, and just need to find 35 more... If not then the Crone may be nessisary, depending on your local "meta"....Down the road, you'll certainly want a second Tyrant, and likely some more Big Bugs (Dakkafexen, and/or Tyranofex) And the meta seems against me, but I like to have plenty of Troops, so you may find you feel the same, after a game or three.
