I have a bunch of Tau that I am currently still assembling and working on and just started to play a couple months ago, but I want to start thinking of a 2nd race to use in conjunction. At first I really liked the idea of trying out all the new Chaos Daemons but then I couldnt really play them together. So my question is what other force would be a cool addition to Tau. I welcome the fluff behind the reasoning too!

Oh and my primary opponent (brother in law who plays 40k) is Space Marines. So I know there is the option for us to play side by side but more often than not we will be head to head.

Eldar. Again. Because Eldar.

More Tau. Because Farsight.

IG as Gue'vesa troops.

Certain Space Marines because it's not just Necrons who get a brofist.

Dark Eldar because the Tau are naive.

Chaos Space Marines because the Tau can also be very dumb sometimes.

Nailed it. The one that makes the most sense for me is the IG as Gue'vesa troops.

Haha. Could you please delve a little bit into why the Tau might exactly team up with Eldar vs Dark Eldar. or IG as i do not know much about these races.. also Chaos Space marines (I feel like there would be cool fluff between these two factions and a reason that I keep fighting with my brothers Ultra Marines)
I was briefly thinking a cool 2nd army could be Chaos marines because they look soo damn brutal and insane lol.

I appreciate it.

IG, or the Imperial Guard, as "auxiliary troops" for a Tau world. Many Imperial worlds break away from the Imperium and join the Greater Good. Those soldiers who sever their ties with the Imperium and join the Tau military are called, by the Tau, Gue'vesa.

The Tau would join with the Dark Eldar because the Dark Eldar offered them something (drugs, chems, tech, who knows?) and, because the Tau don't know how fething sick and twisted the Dark Eldar are (because, again, the Tau are naive sometimes), they sign up for it. They don't know why, late at night, a sentry (or five) Fire Warrior disappears and are never heard from again, but their pale-skinned allies suddenly have a few more of those grotesque abominations on the field, with some disturbingly-familiar features....

Tau would ally with Chaos Space Marines for the same reasons Orks would: They were paid to. The Tau really don't understand Chaos, or what a Traitor Marine is, or what all the tentacles and spiky bits represent. Because the Tau are sometimes dumb.

Gue'vesa is Tau language for 'Human War Unit' or something of that concept. Gue is the racial term for 'human', such as a Gue'la is a human foot soldier, Gue'O is a human commander. It fits humans into the 'la 'ui 'vre and so on line. Gue'vesa is similar to a Kor'vesa, an Air Caste Drone, in the sense that a Gue'vesa is disposable, low quality and all in all inferior to a Shas'la.

Cool. Now I might want to bring allies in the form of assault close-combat support since the Tau have the ranged support down pat. That being said the IG for troops might not be as nice as some select DE or CSM.
I was just reading up on what the GamesWorkshop site has to say on DE units and they are completely sickening haha. My Tau would definitely have to be dumb to team with either of those two factions haha.
This isnt anything that I am prepared to start doing anytime soon but I will have to start coming up with some fluff as to why they would even partner up with either.

Off the top of your heads what units from DE and CSM would compliment Tau in the form of up close and personal fighters against Space Marines?

Just about any of them. Some CSM with the Mark of Nurgle (because Nurgle wants to share his love with the Tau, and the Tau are dumb enough to stand within coughing distance) would be a pretty solid unit, able to soak fire and perform just about equally well in ranged or melee (for CSM, anyway).

A Raptor Cult might be an option as well, depends on how disposable you want to make your CSM allies.

Thank you for that explanation.
Hmm.. it WOULD overall make a lot more sense if my Tau were "smart" to ally up with some IG. hmm. Are there any IG units that excel in close combat?

I think "excel" is too strong a word, as there aren't many armies worse at CC than the IG (the Tau being the one army that is).

You could probably make a go of it with some Ogryns, though.

Well you gave me a lot to think about. Me and my opponent have been working out a sort of 'story line' that we fight by so ill see what he thinks would make for a cool 'chapter' in our story. Thanks!

If you want some guys who kill Marines as easy as a Terminator kills firewarriors ---> Put some Inccubi in a Transport (S4 A2 at I5 with AP2 and a 3+ armor). However, they are expensive (22 points) and suffer from the Overkill Syndrome. They kill most enemies in the turn they charge and get shot in youre opponents turn...

Dark Eldar, the fluf is good, and it gives you the hard CC ability you lack.

Eldar, because...Eldar...

Orks? Why not?

Extremely powerful Codex (Indeed many would say OP) and the two armies are often used together

I've been looking at Necrons, but that's mainly because I think Necrons are really cool and wanted to start them anyway. Wraiths would make a great counter charge unit. "oh, you managed to get through 2 turns of Tau shooting and into charge range? Here, have some wraiths!" A squad of Immortals with an overlord at the front (resurrection orb) would also be awesome for holding a central objective and just not dying. The Doom Scythe is great and would look awesome next to a Forgeworld Barricuda. Tau/Necron Air Force.

That's basically what I plan on doing anyway.

Eldar are batle-brothers for Tau , so farseer can help tau so I propose eldar too
SM can be handy help too, i have some BA and work good whith Tau as they are the close combat that i need.Even if you play vs SM , with the new codex chapters are more diferent.
Orks for storytelling i think are the worst choice as they are the army that tau REALY hates
I like necrons but for story these are more like Good vs Evil ( the new hope vs the death of the Galaxy
About IG ,CSM,and others : Tau just dont care about chaos
Aslo : why Dark Eldar are Desperate alies? i mean in most stories is hard to indetify if a Eldar is "light" or "dark"...

Necrons do look BADASS but I dont think that they could ever ally with Tau. I mean I dont know the fluff on Necrons.. but look at them... they are ancient evil machenery correct? What excuse could the Tau have to ally themselves with the Necrons? I feel like the Necrons would be too hostile off the bat. I am loking the idea of Dark Eldar. Maybe the DE would trick the Tau into thinking that they believed in the "greater good" or that they were "Eldar" leaving out the "Dark" part.

The CC of the Dark Eldar seems super legit.

Necrons got a do-over in their more recent codex to have more personality and individual autonomy (the higher ranking ones anyway). Not everybody is happy about that change, but it does give necron overlords enough wiggle room to want to ally with some other force, at least temporarily, if they can see personal gain out of it.
