Subject: [1800] - Knights / Necrons - Wake the Dragon
|
 |
Screaming Shining Spear
|
Those who have been reading the Horus Heresy novels should be familiar with the events of mechanicum. A small unit unit of knights ends up defending, what is implied to be, the sleeping necron Ctan the dragon.
This force is designed to reflect that.
Primary detachment - imperial knights
Warlord - paladin
Errant
Errant
Combined arms detachment - Necrons
Overlord, MSS, War scythe
3 harbingers of the storm
3x5 necron warriors
3 night scythes
The points value is odd purely due to the event this will be taken too.
Do you think this had any place in a competitive event? The event is allowing escalation and strong hold assault but no forgeworld
The plan is the knights all deploy and the necrons stay in reserve. The issues around come the apocalypse are largely negated due to this alone. When the necrons do arrive, I can drop objective secured units where I need them and the scythes should be adequate AA. I can also use them as an alpha strike and thanks to the 3 stormteks I can comfortably nuke SH vehicles that may escape the knights.
Suggestions appreciated!

Scary. You might want to move the necrons to primary detachment and use the knights in the admantium lance formation. It's nothing but awesome rules for free with no loss.

My main concerns with the once are mainly around the proximity required to get the benefits. It means they have to stick together and with such a small force, I worry about board control should I go this way

The two forces are come the apocalypse so you'll want a little distance anyways. The Knights arn't objective secured regardless so no loss and you don't have to keep them together as the game goes on. It's helpful to protect from alpha strikes and to kill enemy deathstars, but you arn't bound to keeping them together.

What about ditching a stormtek and a unit of warriors plus their scythe in favour of a doom scythe?
This gives me the same AA as needed as well as a super gun for those invisible Death Stars.
I do loose a scoring unit mind you

A Doomscythe seems viable, considering if my Rulebook doesn't lie, you can only have two Troops in an Allied Detachment.
I'd actually put the Overlord in a Catacomb Command Barge though, giving him some mobility and letting him make use of the Warscythe. Sempiternal Weave might be an option to take in addition to MSS.
For the remaining points you could field a unit of Scarab swarms to deal with normal vehicles and leave your StormTeks to strip hull points off Super Heavies.
Another option is to take an Annihilation Barge - rolling sixes to hit Invisible units isn't that big a deal as it's Twin-Linked and Tesla.

Yeah roll with the formation man; it can mean the difference between losing a knight to an alpha strike and laughing off a few hull points.
As for the crons, the barge and the semp weave are both necessary; which probably means losing a scythe.
So something like this:
Overlord, Semp Weave, MSS, Warscythe, CCB- 210
Stormteks x2
5 Warriors: Scythe
5 Warriors: Scythe
Anni Barge
680
Adamantine Lance Formation
Paladin
Paladin
Errant
1120
Total: 1800
Aside from the points being neat, Paladins are better multiples than errants. They'll help with horde control and against most things; you'll want two templates. The errant is there for AP2 and close-in AT action.

I can run the lance formation with the warlord in it from the looks anyway.
I worry the loss of the stormtek and scythe is not made up for in the CCB...

You won't really lose it as you already have two.
Unless you were thinking about taking the Necrons as the primary detachment, you can only take two Troop choices. Unless you wanted to field Death and Despair in a Nightscythe, I firmly believe that a CCB will be the best purchase in the Necron detachment. It gives him so much mobility and durability since you determine whether rider takes shots or not, as well as letting him make use of the Warscythe, The WS being AP1 also helps out against tough to take down foes and with Armourbane, easily dispatches of vehicles.

Nope - I can run the necrons as combined arms - you can have any number of CAD in an army - so troops slots are no issue
