In the rulebook it says a character can leave a unit by moving out of coherency with it. Is this the same as the unit moving out of coherency with him? I want to run a big mek in a Battlewagon with a unit and I want the unit to be able to disembark and leave the mek behind. Would this work?

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

Yes, as long as it is an independent character.
