I remember hearing a while back that one of the theories for the Big E was that he was a time traveler from the far(ther) future (where all humans are uber psyker Space Marines I guess?) and his entire goal is to guide humanity make sure his future comes to pass.

Anyone else hear this theory before?

Sounds like fan-fic, I've never heard it before.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the homunculus back story stands, he's a mega-human made up of the souls of a bunch of humans.

Never heard of the time travel thing

I suspect by the ends of the HH series we'll find out the Emperor's orgins.

seems like a great thing to address

I agree. GW likes to leave things open for the users imagination, especially when it involves the most vital player in the setting. We will get a few crumbs about Big E at the end of the series, but nothing setting breaking.

Let's face it, half the fun of the 40k universe is the unknown bit.

I remember a theory that the Emperor might have gotten a bit busy during the Great Crusade, had a few hundred kids, and killing all those kids will result in him becoming a god. But no time travel.

Thats the theory from the inquisition war trilogy (utter rubbish, would not suggest reading).

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Sensei <- The "sons" in question.

One of the rule books implied this whole theory might have been a tzeentch plot (because that never gets old).

Actually the Inquisition trilogy (and Space Marine) all by Ian Watson are IMO the best 40k novels ever written and urinate all over anything on offer from the current BL authors, as well as being fundamental in helping to establish the 40k universe as we know it.

There seems to be some sort of link between the Sensei and the perpetuals in the HH fluff, but not sure how that will play out. The Sensei seem to be less the results of the Emp shagging his way accords the galaxy during the Great Crusade, but more splitting his conscience into different bodies to protect the future of the Empire should he be destroyed, a bit like Voldemort I suppose.

I couldn't disagree more, the Inquisition trilogy was the first 40k book I read (bought the trilogy a few years ago), so painful to read. If a friend hadn't passed me Eisenhorn to read (with alot of convincing), I doubt I'd have picked up any more black library books if not for him. I'll agree the books tried to get a hand on nearly every aspect of 40k, I just think it did it very poorly.

There were rumours that later editions had replaced Grimm with a Techpriest, was this true?

No, it's arguing about the unknown bit.

Nope OP, never heard that one.

I endorse the Star Child and Sensei fluff regardless of how old it is.
