I've read mixed reports on Maelstrom missions in a tournament setting to date.
Some people think they are the way 40k is meant to be played adding fluidity, the need to adapt and react and a more aggressive style.
However, some think that they are anti-particular builds i.e. gunlines, slower armies and favour alpha strikes too much.

What are your guys views on using them VS the standard missions in a friendly 5 team round robin tournament? (its an unbound theme tournament with no LoWs or super heavies).
Should I give them a whirl and adapt them as needed or would it be better to stick to the original mission set?
Should I mix and match even?

thanks!

Can't help but proffer: http://www.novaopen.com/wp-content/uploads/Final-GT-and-Invitational-Packet.pdf

These missions are pulled from the Indy Asymmetrical Mission Catalog, and are designed both for GT level play and casual / RTT level play.

They're also designed to - by default - soften the blow of match-up on the impact and outcome of a game, as they by definition allow flex in mission selection based upon match-up (in a fair, balanced way).

You can also just play book missions, or try the ETC missions, which weave in modified maelstrom, or check out the BAO/LVO tournament missions, etc.

I'm a strong believer in tourney missions as having more thought and passion put into them than the rulebook missions, so there's my $.02 for ya

I think the BAO missions would be the best for what you are looking for. Just had a tournament with a very casual crowd and they loved them.

These missions have been used all over the world.

Mission 5 is a bit of a work in progress.

While these potentially look fun, there is a lot of comp built into these missions. Missions that penalize you for

1.) Having a lot of psykers.
2.) Not have units in ever FOC
3.) Having lots of characters

Also not a big fan of how some of the primary objectives work for battle points.
SO mission 1, you beat me say 5 objective points to 4, you get 18 battle points I get 0. Seems excessive what say you beat me 5-4 on objective points, control the center and beat me by say 1 KP, you win 27-0. Primary would be better off scored as 9+/- difference in objective points MAX 18.

Mission 2 penalizes you if you don't take units in every FOC., and if you bring a lot of characters. So my wraiths and Necron lord assaults your cultists and challanges, I pick up an almost auto 2 vp, your Chaos lord charges my warriors, you max at 1....some armies by default have way more characters and as such suffer in this mission. Teritiary needs to define scoring and contesting, do OS units hold quarters lacking other OS units, I would think so, but not super clear.

Mission 3 awards players with fast, durable heavy support choices, and penalizes players with lots of psykers.

Mission 4- if neither player reaches 8 points for the secondary does no one get it, also again very all or nothing, you win 8-7 you get all the points.

They could be fun but seem unbalanced to me.
