Do they count as a 'claimed' building for your army when you buy one? I guess that's my question here.

I had this question a few days ago, I can't remember where I saw it, but the rule book says that any fortifications purchased at the start of the game count as claimed. And since they can not be occupied they are always claimed by the owning player. As far as I'm concerned they are a scoring model as per the rules. And it makes a bit of sense fluff wise, that you would put an automated sentry next to a position you'd like to hold.

Makes total sense to me. Thanks!

The rule is found under the section "Claimed Buildings" (rather unsurprisingly ) in the Battlefield Terrain section.
The first bullet point:
"At the start of the game, all buildings that were taken as part of a player’s army are ‘claimed’ by the owning player, whilst all other buildings are ‘unclaimed’."

OTOH, there is some discrepancy because somewhere else it says to ignore fortifications when determining VPs (paraphrase). The two rules seem to contradict; I still believe the VB will hold the objective.

Then by that logic they count as kill points in a kill point game. But it says in stronghold assault that they cannot be awarding victory points nor a determining factor if the army is wiped out but the building is still standing. It's a wipe out.
Building cannot hold objectives it's just to complicated, and no rules that say they can.

Note that it specifies "... at the start of the game..." and not at any other point of time during the game.

and claimed buildings remained claimed until destroyed or a enemy unit enters it.
