Hey guys. I'm a long-time 40k and fantasy player, but I want another smaller game that I can play in a night with some friends without asking them to outlay huge amounts to join me in GW or something we need massive amounts of space or time to play.

So far it seems like Malifaux is right up my alley, but after watching some batreps and reading things I'm not really closer to knowing where I begin. I gather getting a starter box is the obvious way to start and right now the aesthetics of The Guild really appeal to me, but I like the idea of randomness that accompanies Gremlins. Is there anything in the Guild that mirrors some of the weirdness? FWIW, I'm loving the look of the 2E guild box with Lucius and the lawyers (sorry, forget the name and the store is down) but is that a good place to start given the playstyle I like?

From there I'm not sure which books, decks etc. I need, so any help is appreciated.

I'm also a relatively new player but I'll throw in my 2 cents for what it is worth.

IME none of the guild stuff is really very random, they are a more straight forward faction (could be wrong on wave 2 stuff, but wave 1 masters are very straight forward and not random)

Something else to consider is that the in my understanding the Gencon Releases (including Lucius) may not be available for a while (they were available at Gencon and on the website during Gencon and now won't be).

As for books, you need the standard rulebook (contains base rules and all wave 1 models), then I recomend an arsenal deck for your faction (new models come with these cards, but not the faction upgrade cards), and a fate deck (you can use a standard deck of cards, but need to remember suit conversions to do so.

Regarding opacity of rules, I'd highly recommend playing through a game and making a lot of mistakes. It's one of those "way more complex on paper" sorts (though it's still complex).

Definitely this. Just like Infinity, when my brother and I first read the rules, out first thought was 'what the actual feth?'. After playing a game, we were flipping through opposed duels pretty comfortably by turn 2. I'm sure we were still making mistakes, but the core is, as spiralingcadaver says, more complex on paper.

Where my brother and I started was - starter crew each (Lilith and Vikktorias), M2E rulebook each (he went for the mini rulebook), Fate deck each (so we weren't constantly trying to figure out what the suit conversions were). First game, 30ss using just the starter boxes. That was plenty to get into our first game.

Just pick up a crew and go to work.

He is not an easy team, though. Your going to have to lose a few to figure out for yourself what works.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.
