So here goes my first thread.
With the new Codex around the corner I thought about some allies to improve the long range problems the GKs have.
I have two builds I like to toss around.

1.) Eldar

1 Farseer
Uldrathi Long rifle

5 Rangers

4 Dark Reapers
Exarch w. reaper launcher, fast shot

The farseer goes with the reapers. With the long rifle the farseer can shoot on the same targets as the reapers. He can (and should) cast guide on his unit. And if he rolled on it, fortune. This improves both number of shots that hit and survivability of the reapers. You can take more reapers to improve the firepower. Rangers are helping with infiltration as the GKs don't have scouts like other space marines.
As an alternative you can take Guardians with a heavy weapons platform as a standard. And if you have points to sink both Guardians and Dark Reapers can get a wave serpent as a transport which the can bring more long range fire power to the table.

2.)Space Wolves

1 Rune Priest

10 Blood Claws
Drop pod

5 Long Fangs
Rocket launcher or lascannon

Why Space wolves you ask? A rune priest can cast Prescience unlike a vanilla marine librarian. Put him in the squad of Long Fangs (Split Fire!). Throw in a 10 pack Blood Wolves in a drop pod to annoy your opponent at turn one.

As you can see both builds revolve around the seer/rune priest in squad with heavy weapons setup so they can cast guide/prescience. This makes sure youre guys hit. Nothing more annoying than going through the trouble of getting an allied detachment to get the long range tank busters only for the lascannon to miss.

Your thoughts? Better alternatives? Let me have it!

I much prefer the SW option. I think the Farseer is expensive for what he will be doing and I can't see the Rangers doing much. (I'll have to check but I don't think snipers even cause pinning any more). If you want the Eldar option I'd go with an Autarch with Reaper Launcher and a cheap jetbike unit for objective grabbing. I *think* the Autarch's Path of Strategy affects your GKs as well as it states it affects your 'army' rather than detachment and I don't think it's been FAQed, so that's an added bonus. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Good alternative could be IG. CCS with heavy weapon team, Vets with heavy weapon team, three wyverns and plenty of points to spare. You could probably drop a Wyvern and go with a tank commander instead of the CCS as well.

I would go with the Wolves as well. Lascannon longfangs would provide Grey Knights with desperately needed AP2 firepower, and the Blood Claws can camp objectives or tarpit enemy units (two jobs which Grey Knights would otherwise be paying a lot of points to do). You might actually want to put your Blood Claws in a Rhino instead of a Drop Pod - if your Grey Knights are Deep Striking, then the Blood Claws are going to be totally on their own for a turn or two, and might just get wiped out without really accomplishing anything. Grey Hunters might be a better alternative - they fill the same roll as Strike Squads, and so it wouldn't be too difficult to re-shuffle your list to incorporate them. The Rune Priest is an overall good psyker, and the Grey Knights will be generating ample warp dice to power his abilities. Being Battle Brothers, he can spread his buffs across the entire army where needed.

If you do decide to go with the eldar list, I would drop the long rifle from the farseer (if you end up moving your Dark Reapers around, you're going to be snap-firing the rifle). You might want to consider taking many more dark reapers - 10 if possible. Your Farseer will have no other worthwhile targets to cast buffs on, so you might as well make the best of it. Jetbikes would also be a better choice than Rangers, as they can cap objectives very effectively (whereas Rangers will mostly just be stationary on an objective). Not sure about Guardians and a Wave Serpent - how do you intend to use them?

My vote is for the wolves detachment. Seems like it has more effect on what you want. Except I would maybe go with grey hunters in the pod.

As another poster said. For long range support guard is a very good option.

Interesting Points! Thanks everybody for chiming in.

Will definitely have a look into the IG!

Well, in the Eldar list I'd opt for Warwalker with dual scatter lasers. More bang for the bucks. The Farseer could improve their shooting via guide or prescience.

In the SW list, I'd take GH (with special weapons) instead of BC.

I'd look at Space Marines, particularly the Sentinels of Terra (Imperial Fists). You get access to tank hunting Devastators, boosts to your troops' bolters, and even great HQs like Lysander and/or your own custom character. You even get the option to take Centurions as elite choices, which is mic of you're looking for an allied detachment in which you only get one heavy slot.

Overall though 5 bolter scouts in a land speeder storm and lascannon devs can be sprinkled in pretty cheap.

This is not good long range fire power. Rangers are terrible. As in really terrible. Dark reapers die ridiculously easily, and there damage out put isnt worth it.

Better option is:

ataurch...70
5 dire avengers, wave serpent with twin linked scatter laser, shuiken cannon, holo fields. 210

Close to same amount of points and gives you 2 extra scoring units, one very hard to kill.
A extremely nasty gun boat.

I also wanted to improve long range shooting and every problem with high av or t targets
Wave serpents - you need em!
2 will be enough
And put there anything you like.

Personally i use:

Farseer (runes of fate) 100
The spirit stone… 15

Wraithguard x5 160
Wave Serpent 115
Twin Scatter laser 5
Shuriken cannon 10
Holo-fields 15

Spiritseer (Telepathy/Runes of Battle) 70

Wraithguard x5 160
Wave Serpent 115
Twin Scatter laser 5
Shuriken cannon 10
Holo-fields 15

A naked Autarch is not a good solution.

I'd take a Farseer. With guide she could improve the shooting of the DA.

They are going to be in the serpent all game until they unload, and even then it wont be for their fire power. I do not find the value in a 30 point upgrade that does functionally nothing for me. If it were eldar as the primary then I would agree.
