I understand masking tape is a great way to do it, but a problem I'm having is keeping the masking tape stripes the same length, and the same angle. Any tips for how to keep them consistent?

Freehand aiming for around the first stroke around the middle of the spacing you want. Then thicken the stripe to correct the spacing and alignment as you go.

Use an extra strip of masking tape between your stripes to keep them evenly spaced and at the same angle.

Establish where you want your first stripe and lay your first strip of tape. Lay the next strip of take directly against the previous strip. Then lay your third strip of tape against the second one making sure all three are lined up nicely. Now remove the strip in the middle and repeat the process.

+1 for free hand here. I don't use masking at all. It takes a while to get right, but the sense of achievement when it works makes it worthwhile.

I cut a plastic shape a bit like this '>' as a template then use a fine tipped permanent pen to draw the stripes. Then it's just a case of filling them in.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I cut a little stencil like poorly illustrated above. Measure out the size of the stripes you want and cut them to shape, leaving them all attached together by a strip along one side. You'll get uniform stripes easily every time. A quick google found this which you could also make, printing it and cutting it out could work well if you resize it to the scale you want.

I tend to lightly draw the stripes in with a fine point mechanical pencil allowing me to erase and adjust until it is right and then paint between the lines.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!
