Hey everyone, i recently had a very odd idea, in that i should start orks, as my 2nd army, but, since funds are a bit up and down lately, i will probably have to wait a little while. Anyways, if i DO decide that orks would be the 2nd choice for me, then i was planning on using gretchins, and squigs as a large part of the army, but, i am not yet sure, it would mostly be an army that rushes in, then starts to blow everything up, and shoot anything in sight, anyways, like i mentioned b4, i am not yet sure on what i want to do with a 2nd army choice, since it is still between tyranids, orks, grey knights, and maybe eldar.
Thank you for any ideas! budget lists would be nice as well if any available for orks, or the other armies mentioned. Thanks!

The issue is, Gretchen are sub par, and there are no squigs in 40k outside of Bomb squigs (Which aren't a unit, just an upgrade) and Squiggoths which are FW only. If you're starting Orks only for Gretchen and Squigs, you're better off with Fantasy and using Goblins and Squigs that way :(

Balderdash.
Gretchin in Mek Gunz are amazing. Gretchin by themselves are the best little objective holders in the universe.
And I have a whole swarm of squigs and runtherds that I just say "This is a unit of choppa sluggas boyz" and nobody has an issue with it.
I will say though and I'm not sure if this is still the case that the old box set "Black Reach" included a freaking ton of ork boyz and they went for very cheap on eBay. My ork army was constructed by buying a 50$ bucket of ork bits on eBay then around 200 BR ork boys models for 50 cents apiece on average. From that I got Lootas, Burnas, Tankbustas, Commandos and shoota and sluggas boyz. Wonderfully cheap way to start an army.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Gretchin are everything but "great".
They die when shot, they die when assaulted, they die someones looks funny at them. Outside of freak accidents, they are never going to kill anything.
Every unit in the codex is better at scoring objectives, and objective secured means little to nothing when anything that comes within 3" might as well take the time to murder them in combat. Not to mention that you get a fast objective secured vehicle with a rokkit for 5 points less for every boyz mob you take.
The only reason to pick gretchin in 7th is to unlock more detachments for as little points as possible. So if your main appeal for orks was fielding a gretchin army... you should either look elsewhere, or build yourself a gertchin counts-as-AM-army.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

I second Jidmah's opinion, with the added fact that a line of gretchin in front of orks does also make for a useful 5+ cover save if you don't have enough Pain Boys.
