Largely because it's very versatile and makes good use of Pask's abilities. Rending and Preferred Enemy means it can bring down vehicles, any type of infantry and most MCs pretty/very well, there's almost always going to be a target it can do significant damage to.
This versatility also means it pairs well with almost any other Russ, for the times you don't/can't Split Fire there will be enough target overlap that you're not wasting firepower.
It's not Auto-include as there's no such thing, but you really can't go far wrong with it.

Yep, that article has it pegged well.
It IS kitted out for a "take all comers" approach.
The 24" range of the MM's are a good match for the Punisher gun.
I think the lascannon is just to make you feel good with a lucky snipe on occasion.
Since he IS character, I will have to see if "precision shots" are also at play here (ugly!).
Plus the great bonus: 1 HQ slot for 3 tanks!
I had gone to all three heavy bolters and the pintle stubber for the hail of bullets but I planned the rest of my army to handle the heavy stuff.
What is great is remember that it is not firing ordinance so the more you can pile onto the tank the better, BS 4 is not to be ignored.
Having a company command and a few squads with the mentioned conscripts thatl help with keeping the unexpected from jumping that unit.
I have been staring down many Ork hordes lately so I was already looking at this with my IG as well as Wyverns.
I fielded a couple autocannon tanks as well, they have been surprisingly effective with anything including aircraft with the S7 4Hvy TL and again not firing ordinance so it all works pretty good.
The hull LC's get lucky on occasion as well and match the 48" range.
Having them sit back a bit and blast away they seem to pay for themselves.
Many options with this as a starting point.
The 24" range gets a little scary so overwhelming concentrated firepower (which it has) is how to keep from getting swamped.

A Pask Punisher is not a threat to take lightly. I played a game at 1500 pts last night against the new Grey Knights and had two Dread Knights teleport up the field at my front line. My entire army put 3 wounds spread out on the DKs on turn 1 while Pask was just barely out of range. Turn 2, Pask dealt out something stupid like 7 regular wounds and 4 - 5 AP2+ wounds and murdered one of them while the rest of my army dealt with the 2 wounds left on the second Knight. BS4 w/ Preferred Enemy is evil.

I plopped my Pask in a Punisher with multi meltas in a 1500 against my friend's Nurgle Daemons. A little backstory, a few weeks ago I played his daemons and I only had one regular Leman back then. His Plague Drones tied up nearly 70% of my army, including my one Leman, we couldn't do anything to them, they had so many wounds and were so beefy they just soaked up the damage. They had endurance applied and so I just couldn't stop them. Now with Pask Punisher in front of them... I killed 3 of them in the first hail of bullets. Second turn, he was able to put endurance on them... I didn't even get a chance to fire the other Leman at them, Pask had completely obliterated one of his most dangerous units single handed. You could pop him in a couple of the other tanks and he's pretty effective, somebody was trying to convince me of his effectiveness in the Executioner, but for me the Punisher was the best fit. I didn't get a chance to fire at regular infantry, but I'm fairly certain that he would absolutely shred foot soldiers. I'm pretty sure it has been, unless they're talking about orders... which can't be put on vehicles.

Oh for the love of...
Darn old guy remembering older rules strikes again.
Mental note: forget everything, read rules X3, get to the point where you drool from the monotony, then you are good.
Thanks for the correction.
Think the MM and LC combo is growing on me, would still add the heavy stubber for giggles.

Nah, whenever someone doesn't know some new/oddball/changed rule that I do know, I get jealous. I assume that means you have more of a life than I do and don't 'waste' it trolling rules forums and learning all the minutia of the game... Good for you!!

I personally think it's worth the few points just to lower the chances of losing an important weapon in case of Weapon Destroyed results.
