Never! Right?

I was reading through the altar or war missions, and in number 2 "demonic invasion" it says that "chaos daemons always fall back towards the warp rift" which has got my mind tripping...I have played daemons for a long time now and I would be extremely surprised to find out we somehow can fall back and I have been playing them like a noob for so long! They probably just put that in there by mistake eh?

They cannot. Unless something else in the scenario suggests otherwise, the text is probably a fluffy oversight.

Its more likely it is there to cover future changes which could cause CD to be able to fall back - for example a new psychic power could cause them issues, for example.

Future proofing.

Ok good deal...thanks everyone! I thought I was losing my mind there for a moment! I guess it does make sense to do some "future proofing." Nothing else in the scenario suggested it, so it must be that. I, like you, nos also thought that maybe a codex did have a special psychic power that forced a unit to fall back or whatnot, and we could definitely see one in the future.

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, i cant currently think of anything - old-terrify wouldnt have worked, as it removed fearless not the daemons current almost-fearless rule.

I prefer the idea that GW just doesn't playtest, proofread, or edit the stuff they put out. To say they were trying to future proof the scenario gives the design team way too much credit.

This also could just have been a case of the writer for that scenario knew nothing about Chaos Daemons. /shrug

What about CSM daemons? They don't have daemonic instability, is there a chance they could fall back? Is the Eldar Avatar a Daemon?

Is it possible for daemons to fall back due to the "Our weapons are useless" rule?

I don't have my codex with me, but isn't it not that daemons are fearless, but rather that the automatically pass morale tests and the like? Could they then choose to fail instead of auto-passing?

Codex: Chaos Daemons - Daemonic Instability rule - "automatically pass Fear, Pinning and Morale tests (and cannot choose to fail any of these tests)"

So per the rule, they cannot.

Edited to make clear this is a rules quote, not opinion.

If one chooses not to automatically pass the test, has the Unit automatically passed the test?

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

It was an answer, in the form of a question, to Convictus's own concerning if a Unit can choose to auto-fail in this situation.
So let me word it better: If the Unit chooses to fail the moral test, has it automatically succeeded the Moral test?

Ahh, thought it was in response to my rules quote. The one that says they cannot choose to fail.

The names of the play testers are listed in the new codices.

My concern is thus:
Are the play testers attempting to play by Written Rules or by Author Intent?

I can't say either way, but given how easy it is for a researcher to influence an experiment by proximity it is something we can't rule out when it comes to these Play Testers. These people are doing nothing more then experimentation themselves, maybe not advancing scientific knowledge but they are still still observing interactions and documenting what happens. Given the constant back and forth between the Authors, or someone whom represents the Authors, and these Play Testers it becomes possible to raise the above question. These Testers could of been influenced by that proximity, no malicious intent intended, leading to a situation where they are playing with a set of Rules different from the Written.

I would think the intent of the rule is to apply to "the Chaos Daemon players units" rather than "Chaos Daemon units" as is written. That way, it applies to the Daemons' allies as well, so they have a direction to fall back.

Guys, just check the guy's post history, he's a new Troll in the area, or at least someone who needs post count. I've been reporting a few of his messages, i suggest doing the same rather than taking the bait

Also, forgive me if I'm wrong but that was a 6th ed mission and Fearless was possible to remove with a psychic power making it possible to cause non C:CD to fall back.
