So I got the Grey Knight White Dwarf issue with my new Codex and I was looking through it and it has a page where it has a recommendation of base coating the GK in Leadblecher, washing it Nuln Oil and then dry brushing it Necron Compound. I have seen the power in this because that is virtually how I painted my Imperial Knight and he came out looking amazing but my concern is that this would have to be done before the details were painted on, so does that mean I would have to wash some of the details in order to get the same shadow effect?

Right now, I fully paint the model in runefang steel and then do all the details (except anything that will be white), wash it with Drakenhof Nightshade to get those details and to get that blue of the Aegis then paint anything white. I kind of want to try this technique though but I don't know how to get the details to pop like I do when I paint it my way. Here is a sample of what my models look like when I am done and you can see GWs by just looking on their website.

When painting gk I've found that spraying with rust oleum stainless steel then doing a blue, the black wash work well. Then do the details

Washing the details separately is easy enough,
Make sure you have a tiny (TINY!) drop of washing up liquid in the wash to break the surface tension, and watered down enough.

Kitchen roll on hand to quickly suck up any mistakes is essential, and just use small amounts of the wash, carefully applied.

I used a similar technique for my Necrons and will do the same for my (hopefully) soon arriving Grey Knights: black primer, then thinned leadbelcher applied with an airbrush (gives a dark metal tone). 1 part nuln oil and 1 part agrax earthshade sprayed liberally by airbrush. After that I decide by the size of the model if I repaint leadbelcher parts with a brush (bigger models) or directly switch to drybrushing runefang silver. Then for more detailed models I sometimes use necron compound.

I would always do the differently coloured details last, even if you concentrate you usually get some paint on them when drybrushing.

Eldar
Necron
Chaos Space Marines
Grey Knights
Imperial Knights
