Certainly! In fact, I'd have recommended it, even if you didn't already have some. Silver metallics generally look best over black, just as golds work nicely over a brown basecoat.

Yes, of course As Stompin' Stompa said, black looks really good under silver.

This being said, you may also want to consider two other options:

1. If you want to paint your Grey Knights non-metallic, white primer (any brand) or Uniform Grey primer from Army Painter might be easier to work with, depending on how light a grey you're looking for. It's much easier to get white primer to go almost black, than black primer to go almost white.

2. If you want to paint your Grey Knights metallic silver, you may wish to consider Army Painter's Plate Mail Spray Primer. It's a metallic (silver) primer, and if you're after a quick, nice looking army, it's a huge timesaver.

In my opinion, GW Leadbelcher is the route to go, to cover black primer. It's nice and thin, and has excellent adhesion and coverage.

Black primer's good for GK, but I would recommend getting that AP silver primer Talys suggested. Then you'll have the primer and basecoat done with just a single spray from the can.

I didn't know this. Thanks!
Continuing the tangent...
For bronze and brass, is brown generally better than black? I ask because I've got some metal golems I've been thinking about painting up, and I don't think I'll be going with silver.

Parts of a model to be painted with metallic paint will look better if the paint is applied over a darker version of the base shade. So your gold will cover better if you paint it over something like GW Rhinox hide.
