Hey everyone, I play against an empire player on a regular basis. My two armies are high elves and warriors of chaos. Right now he only has enough empire to play at 1500 pts, and usually brings two mortars (sometimes used as cannons), a unit of 12 or so reiksguard, a unit of 20 or so handgunners or pistoliers (i can never remember, they have 24" range with armor piercing), about 30 halberdiers, and about 20-25 swordsmen with two wizards of light and/or life.
My question is how can i counter him with my warriors of chaos or my high elves? For WoC I have a ton of warriors, marauders, and knights, along with a daemon prince, 3 skullcrushers, festus, 10 warhounds, and a chaos lord. With them I usually run 2 6 wide 4 deep blocks of warriors with shields and the mark of tzeench, a daemon prince of nurgle lvl 4 wizard, and run 2 groups of 5 warhounds with vanguard ahead of both blocks of warriors so they cant be charged + get soft cover from his shooting. the DP flies around magicking the place up, and sometimes ill either have knights or skullcrushers (points allowing) at my flank. My questions are: is there any way I can harass his mortar/cannons by at least turn 2, if not sooner, how can i counter his magic (or at least make it worse), and just in general are there any specific items/tactics/cheese i can employ to counter his army?
I have a ton of high elves (over 3700 pts), including a dragon, two griffins from the island of blood, and just a ton of spearmen, white lions, swordmasters, phoenix guard, archers, and cavalry. My question here is: are there any units or items that are specifically better against some of his units? Also, which lore is best to take? I usually take either metal, for his reiksguard, or life/light, to help boost the gak out of my elves. Anythoughts?

Nurgle Prince. Hug terrain to block cannon shots. Push the Skullcrushers up the full distance every turn, until you get to 1" out of his charge range. Then charge. As for the mortar debaqte? Warhounds, or Slaaneshi marauder horsemen. Vanguard up, Move up to harass them, changing formation depending on his deployment. As for High Elves, Take the Book of Hoeth on a level 4 shadow. Empire Initiative isn't that high, and war machines auto-fail the test or die checks. Plus mindrazor keeps empire troops in check.

My list that I used in the last game against the empire was:
DP
chaos armor, d of nurgle, flight, lvl 3 wizard w/LoDeath,scaled skin (5+)[which i was wondering if it improved his armor save by 2 or by 1?],
soul feeder, charmed shield, luckstone, sword of striking - 360
Warhounds - group of 5 + vanguard - 40
Warhounds - group of 5 + vanguard - 40
Warriors of Chaos x25 - FC, MoT, shields - 455
Warriors of Chaos x25 - FC, MoT, shields - 455
BSB - Banner of Swiftness - 150 [with one group of WoC]
Should I get more cavalry so i can get into combat faster so he cant shoot at me? Because M4 is pretty slow, thats why I put in the BoS.
As for the HE, would getting warmachines be a good move? Or would it be better to try and harass his warmachines with some eagles?

I'd swap one block out to halberds, so you can deal with knights that bit easier.

Those are reAlly big blocks of warriors. Usually I run mine 6x3 for killing power. I might lose about 6 getting in, but then it's still two full ranks worth of combat power.
Might make the blocks smaller, and as was mentioned swap shields for halberds. Also, mark of khorne for the extra attacks.
That will give you more points to have either extra blocks of warriors, or the skull crushers, fast cav, etc to fine tune the army.
