It's up on Kickstarter now (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-cav-strike-operations) and I'm curious. I like the use of cards for units, and how akin to the old Mechwarrior, your units change as they take damage (typically get worse as they get wrecked...) but I was hoping it might move to a hex based board, rather than rulers... So far, it's looking like rulers (i.e., no board mentioned anywhere!) I wonder how easy it would be to play with a grid?

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

I doubt anyone can really give you a definitive answer. IIRC, first ed CAV could be played either on a hex map or on an open board, and I think open board was the default in 2nd ed. I liked 1st ed CAV. . . . 2nd ed, not so much. I will probably back the KS, but am undecided if I want the early bird, the second wave, or just a $1 pledge. I really want to see the rules first.

I preferred Btech for small scale games (less than 5 models per side), but 1st ed CAV still played well with 20 CAV plus vehicles and infantry per side. Kind of makes me bummed that I sold off almost all my old CAV models a few years back.

Why would you want a hex based board? Battletech converts easily to rulers which opens up a lot more options for terrain honestly.

hex based (or any grid, really) is just much nicer. Easier to store (fold up your map, voila, you're done!), less fiddly, and looks nicer. I'm just a bit more of a boardgame type than tabletop ruler guy...

It is also much less subjective. Ranges, LOS and the like is much more hardcoded and easy to check. Less arguments, faster... I'm kinda leaning towards hexes too lately, since I came back to HG 2nd edition.

One of the "distinctive" pieces of CAV was that once you fired on someone/thing that got to shoot back as a response. That made it improtatnt to try and either get the drop on your opponent or pit heavier against lighter types. However, my memory is a bit faded.

I bleieve you candownload the rules from the Reaper website for free. PM if you need help finding them.

Reaper/Cavboss has said that they will put up a pdf of the CAV:SO rules sometime during this kickstart, as a free download.

Whether I stay in or not will likely depend on how well I like what I read. Anyway, I'd just hang tight for another week or two, and you'll probably have all the information you want.

Never played CAV, but I did love playing Battle tech. Does CAV allow you to customize mech stats ?

1st ed CAV did*. I don't believe that the ability to create custom CAV, or even modify them much, made it to 2nd ed. I am hoping that the new rules are a lot closer to 1st ed than 2nd. (And I don't recall if reactive fire made 2nd ed. It was a great feature in 1st though.)

* IIRC, you could do weapon swaps easily, and there were rules for different power plants, and I think you could swap out the ECM and Target Lock components, and you might even have been able to modify armor and movement. Heck, I vaguely recall rules for building one from scratch, but that could have been fan-based.

Thanks WarlordGarou !

I enjoy having options to work with, and wouldn't mind being able to convert my battletech and mechawarrior miniatures.
