Howdy, thanks for stopping by!

Since I'm new here I'll briefly introduce myself. My name is Christian, I'm 31y old and recently I got back into Warhammer 40k.
If this sounds anything like the introduction for an AA meeting thats because it sort of is.

I've been playing WH40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Epic 40k and Mortheim during my youth. I did a lot of painting back then, that is why im not exactly starting at 0. I left the GW tabletop games at around 15 to 16 but I never really stopped caring about the universe and the lore (I read some books, played the video games etc.)

It started off with my and my younger brother joking around about how funny it would be to collect an army again. And here I am, collecting DE while he has a Nurgle-themed CSM army. I initially started with buying the Tyranids army box, but I quickly realized that painting this (and this alone) would quickly burn me out. So I decided that a I want a second a project to work on, which I'm showing you now.

After a lot of testing I eventually settled on this color scheme:

Kabal Warrior a)
Spoiler:

Kabal Warrior b)
Spoiler:

Wych a)
Spoiler:

Wych b)
Spoiler:

The whole edge highlighting is a royal pain in the rear, but it's kind of nice when everything comes together in the end. I'd say the overall effort that goes into these models is very high, considering they are mere troop choices. Each model needs at least 40 distinct steps (excluding the base), probably 8-10 more for the Wyches with their flesh and colored hair. I'm terrible at highlighting areas that have no clear edges, like the legs or the chest of the wyches. I'll have to work on that. I think my highlighting work work in general has already become a little bit cleaner with my third model, which is a raider including crew:

Raider a)

Raider b)

Raider c)

Raider d)

Raider e)

In the end I'm happy about how the overall composition, the weathering and the decals turned out. I had a terrible time while applying shades and varnish to dark and large surfaces, the finish all over the model is really spotty and uneven. Luckily its not something you can see on a normal viewing distance. The color of the hull is Naggaraoth Night, shaded with purple and black to tone it down. For the next large model I consider using just a toned downed purple without any shades whatsoever.

Only the pilot is glued to the frame, the others can be removed. After some layers of color and varnish they cling to the vehicle just fine. The gunner is snuggled between the sail and his turret. Dark lance and flyer stand are magnetized. Quick tip: If you don't attach the magnet for the stand even (as in perfectly horizontal) and skew it just a bit, you can rotate the flyer / skimmer around the base and get both and ascending or an descending looking model!

The next unit that I'm going to paint is a 10 man squad of Warrior, which are already primed. I think I will paint them in batches of threes. I painted the whole Raider crew (5) in one batch, which as almost too much for my liking. I just cant stand the feeling of doing assembly line work.

Here is the rest of the crew:

The Omega Spur:
Spoiler:

You can see a different color scheme that I did earlier. They are going to get stripped. I also glued them together before I even understood my weapon choices, so the leader of that squad got a PGL (which is now lacking on my Wyches). Oh well.

After the Warriors I'm going to paint my Warlord:

Archon
Spoiler:

The arms / weapon choices are magnetized. I have one spare PGL that I'm going to attach to his back. This was also the first time that I came into contact with "Fincecast" as there was only plastic and metal back in the days. And I have to say: What a bloody mess! Yeah the details are nice, but I don't really see how they are that much better than on the newish plastic models. The amount of flash around these models is just crazy, to a point where its difficult to tell whether its junk or a part of the model.

Anyway.

Once all this stuff is painted I'll think about what to do with the bases, at least the skimmer bases are supposed to look a little bit more exciting. As for general hobby progress, this army breaks 1000 points easy, which is enough for now. When this is done I'd like to get some of the GW ruins (and paint them!) and bump Tyranids up to 1000 points (and paint them).

That'll be in another 15 years I guess

Thanks for reading, if you have any questions or comments feel free to ask.

Just use the Dakka gallery, that way you're sure that they work.

Hobby progress!

It's moving on very slowly. I managed to paint 3 Warriors. I'm experimenting with batch size, I don't think I'm going to move past 3 with these kind of models. I'll paint the next few models in batches of 2 and see if I like it better.

Some progress images:

Basecoat: Some basecoats have to wait until the shades have been applied.

Shades: The purple shade looks terrible like that. It's so patchy. The valejo matte varnish brings it back together though.

Layers and details: So so much edge highlighting that needs to be tidy...
