Subject: [1850] - Tyranids - Self allied, tournament

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some feedback regarding two lists. Tournament is a two source, 1850 point, Forgeworld Allowed, event that I'd like to do well in. I'm not against taking a Formation, but I've experimented with both Skyblight and Living Artillery and have been underwhelmed.
Skyblight seems to be a *duh* and I believe most tournament lists will easily handle it since it loses its gas after you start losing units.
Living Artillery is a good alternative to Skyblight but has plenty of terrible matchups that tournaments are packed plum full of: Knights, Wave serpents, Necrons, etc.
So my game group is really trying to put something together that doesn't utilize formations and here's what we've come up with:
Tervigon list:
Tyranids: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment) Selections:
+ HQ +
* Hive Tyrant
Electroshock Grubs, Hive Commander (*), Powers of the Hive Mind, Psyker (Mastery Level 2) (Psyker), Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms, Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms, Wings

* 30x Fleshborer Termagant
* Tervigon

If you don't like either list, can you suggest and alternative and why you don't like these? They are largely different lists that rely on different ways of winning.

My vote would be for the tervigon list as it gives you more in you face units. Turn 2 will be a ton of monstrous creatures in their face.

I voted Carnifex, because I think it's stronger. But I think you can win games with either list. Tervigon seems to be overpriced these days, and I hear that many Tourneys are ruling spawned Termagants are Not OS. So that is just one more straw on the camels back.

I agree that if spawned gants aren't OS then I lean towards the Carnifex list.
On the other hand, even though both are light on troops, the ability to generate more with the Tervigon can/will win games more often than the ability to remove models....imho

I voted for Carnifexes, they're one of the better units in the Codex, plus most tournaments I see rule Tervigon Gants as non OS to make them fair with other units that create models.
Also because there is a bit of bias and I've had bad experiences with Tervigons (rolled 2,2,1 first turn when I first tried them, talk about bad luck) and they seemed to get shot down more than any other unitwhen I fielded them (is that a bad thing? Depends on what else you're running I suppose).

I think the Carnifexen also give me a glimmer of hope against those 1-2 Imperial Knight lists. S9 HOW, S10 on the charge is nothing to scoff at.....if they actually make it to combat.
The Tervigon change doesn't offer any of that.
Additionally, while I think that in most games they won't matter....but the Hormagaunts being so much faster than other cannon fodder, if they're forgotten about, they most definitely can tarpit Riptides and Wraithknights.
EDIT: I take it back, Carnis don't have Adrenals. Either way, S9 is still pretty decent against AV12.

Tervigons just arent worth the points in my opinion, ds ripper broods would serve you better and can use the saved points on bolstering your army.

I typically would agree, however, generating additional troop units can be the game breaker that wins games....
On the contrary, I still am convinced that other than it's spawning ability, it is mainly a liability.
So it seems to be rather obvious based on most responses that the Carnifex list is the one to go with.
Anyone else?
