Hi guys I'm going to a kill team tournament at the beginning of November and was hoping for some help making a competitive list. I was hoping to choose between tau or dark eldar but I don't have either codex yet as I'll be buying it with the models for my list so I have no idea what would be good. What would you guys recommend ?

1st, are you playing by the official Kill Team Supplement rules?
There's only 3 threats you have to watch out for in Kill Team:
1. A Horde - like 25 to 30 Orks, just reduce them to half
2. Vehicles - if you have no anti-vehicle, they're a problem
3. Break Tests - if you're reduced to half, your units may flee
With Tau, they've got stuff to take care of all those, with their Fire Warriors being a stand-out unit because they have really good guns for a pretty cheap price.
With Dark Eldar, they're insanely good against Hordes because they really are experts against infantry as their fluff suggests, but I think they have problems with Vehicles. Their best bet is probably Wyches + Haywire Grenades wargear, which is pretty expensive, and they are squishy until they make it into melee. This is based on their current codex, which is pretty old, and newer codices almost always make units cheaper.
With those conditions in mind, Tau (assuming you take enough models to deal with Hordes, Vehicles, and Break Tests) looks like a better option. The tricky thing is rumours suggest a new Dark Eldar codex right around the corner...possibly by November! You want to take a chance and see what the new Dark Eldar codex brings?

Fire warriors make for good kill-teams, but there's a lot to be said for battle-suit based teams, too.
You need 3+ models, so sadly no riptide, but stealthsuits are mobile and carry hella firepower, whilst crisis suits are one of the few kill-teams who can bring a bit of everything because you can mix and match weapons in the team.
Don't bother with markerlights because of Every Man For Himself, but a small fire warrior team backed up with a crisis suit or two should be nicely effective. Configure the suits for stand-off light armour killing (missile pods) and to take down stuff that's resistant to small arms (fusion blasters) and you're probably good to go; trust pulse weapons for crowd control.

Thanks for the replays guys tau are starting to sound pretty appealing and after a quick look online I think a good list idea could be
6 fire warriors
1 crisis suit with burst cannons
2 crisis suits with plasma
But my only worry would be if my fire warriors got charged as there not great in combat.

Well, since every man is for them self run a FW up ahead to get charged while the rest fall back. Remember that for a small upgrade a crisis suit can take signature equipment. That gauntlet is hilarious in KT. So is the 'gets hot' item.
Don't overlook Stealth suits, 3+ save and with the dense KT terrain they will almost always have 2+ cover. A fusion blaster is a cheap upgrade and will chew through vehicles.

Actually, I've had Dark Eldar in my mind for a solid kill team for ages.
You can easily run a Raider with a largish group of Kaballite Warriors inside. You can kite around in that fast vehicle capable of hurting other vehicles and you have your anti-infantry firepower in the warriors.
