Hi guys,

Open to feedback on the list below. My thoughts are that this will hurt any jack heavy army as well as providing some decent assassination capabilities and also take out a fair amount of infantry too.

Lord Arcanist Ossyan (+6)
Sylys Wyshnalyrr (2)
Phoenix (10)
Phoenix (10)
Arcanist (1)
Arcanist (1)
Mage Hunter Strike Force (full) + UA (8 + 2)
Mage Hunter Strike Force (full) (8)
Mage Hunter Assassin (2)
Mage Hunter Assassin (2)
Narn (3)
eEiryss (3)
Ghost Sniper (2)
Ghost Sniper (2)

Ossyan's feat should produce a significant amount of hurt including boosted blast damage from the Phoenix's AOE. Additionally, since Sylys allows Ossyan to camp one of his focus normally allocated to upkeep, he should have enough to keep at least Quicken and Shatter Storm in play and still spam out up to 3 x Arcantrik Bolt (leaving Ossyan with 0 focus left) from a distance through the Phoenix's arc node enabling Narn or the Assassins to guarantee hits on the stationary jack/s (assuming they are within threat range).

For a 35 point list I can take out one of the Phoenix, Arcanists and run one of the MHSF units as a min unit (5) - or - I could take out eEiryss (or Narn), a unit of MHSF and the Ghost Snipers ...

This list would do ok against jack heavy armies, but there are a few issues building that way. First of all jack heavy armies are rare - you usually see 1-2 jacks in an army, the Vyros Griffon spam type lists with 6+ jacks are rare exceptions. Secondly despite the additional dice against jacks Strike Force aren't that great at killing heavies - POW10's don't go that far against ARM20. You can do some decent damage on the feat turn, but that is only for 1 turn and I still wouldn't want to try and shoot a Conquest to death with POW10's...
The other obvious issue is that this list is has no game against Hordes at all, or indeed any real way to deal with high ARM that isn't a jack. You have no way to boost your accuracy or your damage, so running in to something like a wall of Iron Fang Pikemen would be a major problem. As a general guide when building a list you want to be able to deal with stuff with high DEF (Strike Force aren't doing much to DEF15 Nyss on a hill), high ARM (you have this covered ok against jacks, but not on units or warbeasts) and Stealth (nothing in this list hurts Stealth).

Boosted blast damage is nice, but using 3 Arcantrik Bolts is a terrible plan. Arcantrik Bolt is cast only slightly more often than Chronomancer (which is basically never used because Ossyan has other upkeeps to use), you use it to nuke a Incorporal solo or a Jack that has walked into a stupid position, but that's it. You should never have 3 jacks within range to make stationary - you will get much better use out of that focus by allocating it to a Phoenix or casting/upkeeping Admonition (which is probably his most game changing spell).

Basically this list looks nothing like a normal Ossyan list, its incredibly fragile and would get slaughtered by AOEs. It actually seems more like one of the Mage Hunter type casters theme lists and is missing a bunch of things that I would considering auto includes with Ossyan. Just working down from the top:
- Sylys is a great for Ossyan, who will almost always have multiple upkeeps out. Arcane Secrets is useful for making a single Arcantrik Bolt stick (a boost + Arcane Secrets is very good odds to land the hit you need) but that's about all that will be used for.
- A Phoenix is a good flexible jack. Combustion gives you ways to deal with high DEF, he is a good heavy hitter and the Arc Node is useful for getting upkeeps out without having Ossyan up close (I would use it to get Admonition back up more often than firing a nuke from it). That said Ossyan is not a spell slinger and has no need for two arc nodes. He likes two heavies though and a Banshee is by far the most common jack for Ossyan to run. The biggest thing it brings is the Knockdown gun, which helps fix the lack of accuracy buffs in this list (and Ret in general), but it is also a good melee beatstick and the combination of Admonition + Wailing can shut down some models hard (notably 3Butcher).
- 2 Arcanists are pretty much auto include with 2 Heavies in the list
- Full Strike Force is a good choice, but you can definitely get something more useful than the 2nd unit with no UA. You want different units to cover different options.
- MHA are nice but Narn doesn't really have any synergy with this list. Ossyan doesn't offer him anything, you should have plenty of heavy infantry clearing from range if you building him right and he will actually engage models (unlike the MHA who can hit something from 4" away and stay unengaged to avoid the penalty for shooting)
- eEiryss is good in any list.
- Ghost Snipers have no synergy with Ossyan, their main ability is the auto 3 damage which doesn't roll dice for damage.

Stuff that you probably need:
- a melee unit. Halberdiers are great with Ossyan as they don't block your own LOS for shooting and give you some good damage output without having to rely on shooting. With Quicken and a Thane they have one of the longest charge threats in the game for an infantry unit (and its longer than many mounted units lol) and DEF15 ARM18 is pretty durable.
- Aiyanna and Holt. I would consider them more important than Eiryss tbh - the damage buff is huge (extra dice is good, but a straight +2 is better) and magical weapons are very important to give you options against Cryx and Menoth
- a shooting unit other than Strike Force. Stormfalls are the easiest to fit in but Riflemen or Invictors would also be good. The Stormfalls give you some higher base POW, AOEs to deal with low ARM Stealth (note that your list as is has no way to deal with Stealth at all) and Fire shots to deal with Shield walls and Vengeance.
If you drop the 2nd Strike Force unit, the Snipers, the MHAs and Narn you have enough for two out of these 3 options basically.

hey man, thanks for the feedback. I agree with what you've outlined and you're right, I have Kaelyssa's Tier 4 but I picked up Ossyan and Ravyn in a trade that I did so was curious to see they could fit into my existing models.

I've actually had a bit more thought and would probably trade out the Phoenixes for Manticores in this list to lay down covering fire and add some decent melee attacks with 18 P+S (after spending focus) hits with each hand as well as the throw capabilities etc.

Alternately, leave a Phoenix and add a couple of Manticores at the expense of one MHSF unit. This gives me Covering Fire as well as solid P+S and open fists as well as retaining an arcnode.
