Hey folks!

I'm a total 40k noob. I've always had a bit of an interest in the fluff, and recently bought a big chunk of the FFG RPG books to get some background info and to be able to play them. During the holidays, I'd like to run some Deathwatch games for my buddies and I thought it'd be cool if I had some Space Marine figures I could give them to represent their characters.

I'm looking to get 5-6 figures. They don't need to all be from the same chapter. In fact, I think it'd be cool if I had one Space Wolf, one Dark Angel, etc. I'm also willing to buy from a third party company that makes "not quite Space Marine" figures, like Anvil Industry.

Any suggestions, recommendations, or advice? Thanks!

A box of sternguard will give you a ton of cool parts for veteran marines but the legs are all very similar and static. A box of vanguard to go with them will bring you up to 10 marines total with a TON of cool options to mix and match to create marines with both close combat weapons and guns.

Anvil I think is great for extra little bits like much more tactical looking guns as well as snipers that are sorely lacking in the marine line.
As well they have some great stands ins for relic plasma/meltaguns.

Anvil also do things like roman shields and wolf pelts that make for cheap and great little things to make your marines look more like Ultramarines or Space wolves (ect), GW themselves have some good bitz too but you have to buy whole kits to get 3 parts you want or scour ebay.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

You can check at your FLGS and see if anyone has bits to swap, rather then ordering online or dredging e-bay. Dark Angels, with their inclusion with DV might be easy to find.

Do you know what your players are interested in? Are you going to need specialists? The command squad box is where you can find the apothecary. Techmarines are their own thing, but the SM vehicle accessory sprue has a shoulderpad that can be used to make one.

The multipart captain kit has an Ultramarine shoulderpad, as well as a good number of cool bits.

But one thing you need from both those kits are the deathwatch shoulderpads. The command squad has 2, and the captain has 1. GW does sell a pack with 10 of them and some snazzy bolters if you want to go that route.

But overall I’d just recommend the sternguard/vanguard kits. Sternguard in particular are very cool. But a tac squad with a varied paint job will work in a pinch.

Thanks for the ideas so far!

I should probably note that both my buddies and I are new to 40k, so I'm more interested in having them look badass than in having them be strictly canonical.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

I would buy a tactical squad box and ask any 40k players you know for extra bits.

Only thing this won't give you really is jump packs. Other than that you'll have most of the stuff needed for starting Deathwatch characters. Unless they go for techmarine or assault marines.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

If you only need 5 figures, get the "Dark Angels Chapter Upgrade Frame", it comes with enough parts for 5 complete models (robed ones, do deathwatch wear robes?) and many, MANY bits you can trade around.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

On another note, while it IS kind of expensive GW DOES offer a deathwatch upgrade pack containing the nesscary shoulders for it.(as well as completly unnesscary heads and bolters) http://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Deathwatch-Kill-Team-Conversion-Kit

I'm not sure I could reccomend getting it at that cost, but I thought I'd let you know it exists

Yeah you can just get a Tact box and some bits for the other chapters. If you're really serious about it, I have some spare Deathwatch shoulder pads and bolters I could possibly send your way (having just wrapped up a KillTeam of my own made from all the First Founding Chapters).
