Black Templars chapter tactics don't lend themselves to drop pods the same way Salamanders or Ultramarines do. However I'd like to think of some way to utilize their chapter tactics in drop pods.

What about a cheap squad of five chainsword Initiates and five shotgun neophytes with a flamer?
125 points for a cheap anti infantry squad with some added assault capabilities.

I've thought a 10 initiate squad with 2 meltas and with the Sword Brother having a combi-melta can wreck vehicles, and can charge a weak unit if they survive. Can't remember if SB can take ranged weapons though

The SB can take a combi weapon but you only get one special in the squad, so it's no different than a Tac Squad.

Maybe a HB / Plasma Gun / Bolters 5-man drop pod would be viable. 140 points. If you want to spice it up, upgrade for a SB with a Plasma pistol (or Grav) and you have 165 points. I always recommend DWL, but point creep. HB snap shots on arrival but has 3 shots; and close range Plasma Gun and Bolters will get two shots each.

Obvious, I'm sure, but Drop Pods really shine with good placement. Made a risky drop behind my enemy's Ironclad Dread. 10 Bolt Pistols into its Rear Armor glanced it down Turn 1!

If you can't get good shots in, Run them into cover (yay for Crusader) and hope they survive till next turn.

Why bother drop podding in a heavy weapon squad?

Primary purpose of a drop pod seems to be to get a short range squad into range to shoot.

I suppose you could use it to deliver an assault unit, but they'd have to run when they land to get close.

To further answer why you would drop said squad:
- Heavy weapons still snap fire.
- HB is the only heavy weapon available to Crusader squad that has multiple shots, and thus having the best chance to hit when it arrives.
- Only one guy in the squad has a heavy weapon, the rest have rapid fire (and should get two shots each provided you landed well).
- They can destroy a vehicle if dropped correctly (facing rear armor).
- They can fill the even number drop pods (ones that don't come in turn 1).
- They can hold/contest an objective.

I am not saying this is an ideal drop pod squad choice. I am saying this is something that only Black Templars can do and might have a use.
