Example, I just got myself a few Psykers and I was thinking about basing them differently than my usual units to make them stand out a little more. Haven't thought of how though. My Techpriest I was definitely thinking of a few things to try. But yeah, does anybody do that for their special character minis? I know some minis lend themselves to different bases, like Catachans you'd probably want to do something jungle themed or Kriegers, something bleak looking.

Drive closer! I want to hit them with my sword!

For my deathwing knights I use barbwire on the base, to make it look like they are assaulting the toughest part of the line. it just adds flavor, but in short order yes, I base one unit differently. The dreadnought and knights are my army centerpiece. Did the same with the chaplain in Terminator armor so it looks uniform. It lends the talking point, so I say go for it!

I am basing each type of unit for my nid army differently, though that was an unintended result at first. I kept finding new basing techniques that I liked better than the previous ones, but I didn't want to have to back and redo 300 bases.

All of my bases are urban-themed, but each unit type has a different style. My hormagaunts are half buried in rubble, while my tyrant and tyrant guard are on concrete with pools of water running off and my gargoyles are flying over ruins. Hopefully when finished they will all look cohesive enough to be part of the same first but different enough to stand out from each other. Hopefully...

I tend to base each squad that could play together in an army differently, for two reasons. First, it separates them more clearly than just a colored ring around the base. Second, and much more importantly, I'd get bored with basing 50 units all the same way

This is something I am interested in too. I keep seeing many different options for basing, and I like the idea of my whole army being based the same so I keep getting stuck deciding on one type of base ~ but I am also starting to think that different(ish) bases for different units is a much better idea.

I think Freytag93's solution of a theme for the army, split by type is a great way to go. Just a few little differences, reflective of where they'd be in a battle.
The only downside is if you play on a rural map that is all grass, trees and hills (which is a bit "Warhammer") ~ but the plus side of looking freaking awesome on an urban table (which is much more "40K") is totally worth it

Something I am doing is magnetising the feet and bases of several "multi use" models. For example, my Terminators are magnetised so I can swap them from "Space Hulk" style bases (grids and pipes) to tabletop bases (vegetation or urban etc).

Something I have learned about magnetising bases - Have a "master model" that you use to check the polarity for all following models. It took me a few seconds to work out why some bases would only go on some of my Terminators! o.O (wrong polarity on some of the feet / bases). It's an obvious and simple mistake, but when your mind is thinking of many other things, having something physical / practical to check with as you work can really help reduce simple mistakes

Basing is how I tie an army together, so I try not to vary it too much. A few of my Crimson Fists assault Marines have more urban rubble on their bases so I can do some dynamic poses, but that's it.

I like keeping them uniform with the rest of the models but thats just me

We go for the eyes.
Then the tongue.
Then the hands.
Then the feet
Then we skin the crippled remains.
