Particularly those HQ choices with a BS5.
Typically you'll lose an attack with whatever weapon you're using but a maybe 1-3 shots (depending on weapon) will be worth it .

I think the loss of a CC attack is generally not worth the mediocre boost to shooting. If you want to help shoot, grab an auspex and help with the cover saves. Then pull out your CC weapon of choice and charge.

We can get more shots downrange from a lot of diferent places. Semi-competent melee is only found in the HQ slot.

Taking a combi-weapon often means sacrificing an attack - that's never a good tradeoff. But if you take a Storm Shield, it sometimes doesn't matter.

Combi-gravs and combi-plasmas can be an okay choice on a bike or terminator captain - lets you soften up your target before charging. I wouldn't take a combi-melta, as you shouldn't be tank-hunting with your HQ.

Very good way to think about it.

I guess I just get distracted looking at that BS5 and not wanting it to go to waste.

If you want to use that BS (and I can’t believe I’m typing this) you can always pick up a plasma or grav pistol. Sure, they are overpriced, but at least on a BS5 HQ they hit on a 2+, probably wound on a 2+ at AP2. And you still get your extra CC attack (assuming you didn’t take a specialist weapon) Still not worth 15 points, but you get a lot more milage on a HQ then you do with the same gun on a 1W, BS4 sarge somewhere in your list.

I had considered that option as well.
Part of me likes the iconic plasma pistol and power sword combo.

I’m right there with you. Iconic, nostalgic, Rule of Cool, the works. Efficent use of points in today’s ruleset and meta? Nope.

But then again, I still sometimes field my old stormbolter/powersword captain, just out of fondness for the old 3rd ed chunk of lead. Horribly inefficient, but he sucks in style!

Yeah, there is just something special about fielding a unit based on it's appearance and background instead of a detailed math hammer analysis.

Best of both worlds is if you can field a classic unit that also performs well.
