anyone know of any decent 54mm shields being made, or shields large enough for a contemptor dread that have a templarsy- knightly feel to them

AFAIK, the "aftermarket" bits market for 54mm is pretty much nonexistent, as the scale is geared towards painters/collectors more than gamers.

Any reason you couldn't make one, yourself? The geometry of a kite or heater (most appropriate for Templars - which one, exactly, dependent on time frame) shield is pretty simple, as is the design of a Maltese cross - a bit of simple layering of styrene (or cardboard, in a pinch) sheet, perhaps with a bit of gentle curvature, should give you little trouble. In fact, it would likely be more in line with the 40k aesthetic, which generally has raised iconography (to ease painting), as opposed to a 54mm kit meant for display painting, which would likely be flat/

Yep - I would say cut it out of flat styrene - bend it over a curved bit with a little heat applied to relax the plastic and keep the shape.

Nothing to it.

Scribor does make some pretty beefy shields (or they did...haven't looked recently). I know some of them had to be over 30mm tall.

There is a bit of a market for 1/32 (54mm ish) figure models - but it is a niche within a niche, and more often than not...those modelers will kitbash or scratch build as opposed to buy specific parts. The stuff that does exist tends to fall into the super detailing category...real wood, metal, rivets...etched brass for leather straps - cost you $75+ for a single shield, hand made one at a time type stuff.
