Subject: Arjac WIP - Advice on the shield? - UPDATE - Press mold success!

So I found a bit, which some of you may recognize, that I think is a perfect oversized size and roundness for Arjac's shield. Got a couple of problems though. As is, some folks may recognize where the bit came from. So I am not sure what to do. I tried tacking on some Space Wolf trinkets but then the round smooth shield had too much sticking out off of it. Even thin bits didn't work looks-wise. So physically adding on stuff is out.
Do I greenstuff in the etching in the shield? Then the shield is even plainer. Do I stencil something on there with paint (my free hand skills are terrible). Any and all ideas will be most helpful. Thanks guys!

Could you stick a normal round wolf shield in the middle maybe sanded on the backside to make it sit flush and just look like a deaign rather than a shield stuck on another. I do like the size though but it does look very tau currently

Yeah no matter what I do I'm going to have to cover or fill in the etchings on there which give it its Tau-ness.
Are there normal round wolf shields? The ones from the Terminator kit are more like crosses and the power armor kit are rectangles. I suppose I could try to really sand down the bit and maybe add a layer of greenstuff to the shield so the bit won't be sticking out as much... Or do you mean the TWC shields? At the moment I am forgetting what those look like.

The TWC shields are round, and have no hands on the back so would fit on easily enough.
What are your GS skills like? You could try sculpting on a simple shape of an anvil and hammer or a wolf skull. Alternatively, how about making a press mould of an existing shield design so you can get the iconography without having a 'shield on a sheild'?

That didn't even cross my mind. Excellent idea. My green stuff skills stop at gap filling but I bet I could make a press mould! Thanks! I have tried moulds like that before there are a little flexible and brittle but if stuck to a shield would be fine. Yes the shields I meant were the thunder wolf cav shields

That's the idea, just be sure you let the first one really dry (I'd leave it at least 36 hours to be sure. Also, maybe use more blue than yellow to make it harder) and to coat it in something the new GS won't stick to.
As it's only for one use, it should work out ok.

Just my personal taste I guess, but I think using this bit as a shield is an awful idea. Unless you have made skills I think every person who sees it will say, "isn't that a Tau.." Plus it's almost comically oversized. You've got to have a better bit sitting around that you could use, right? IF you insist on using it, I would definitely fill in the groove with GS. That is one of the aspects of the bit that immediately identify it. After that, you could consider adding a round shield from the Chaos Marauders kit. At least it is the same shape. But again, it's going to look comical - like you glued a Chaos Marauder shield to a Tau drone.
Again, I'm' not trying to sound harsh or anything. By all means, do it if you feel so inclined. Just my opinion, after all, but there's gotta be a better way to make a Space Wolves styled shield. Good luck!

Already filled in the gaps on the shield with Green stuff so no worries there. Hope the press mold transfer works out when I attempt it in a couple of days. Gluing another actual shield on there is a horrible idea because it'll look like a shield jutting out from another shield (I tried it out, it stuck out way too much unfortunately). Which is why I am going to try a thinner press mold.

I went with the 'press mold' method and for my first time ever doing this, it worked out quite well. Sorry the pictures aren't the greatest, my real camera recently broke so I had to use my cell phone

Wow, that looks soooo much better! Even the size isn't as much of an issue for me as I thought it would be with the right work done on it. It almost has a beaten/hammered look to it due to the tool marks from sculpting. Still, I think it's a wee big, but it's easy to look past that now with the work you put it. Great work. Have any more plans for embellishments? I think it might look better with, perhaps, some sort of border around the rim. Scandinavian knot work would be superb, but super hard lol. Maybe something as simple as a partial pelt, dangling chains and wolf tail, etc. Something like that. Needs a little something more...

Looks great, glad to see the press mould worked and you chose a nice design too. I agree it maybe needs something else around the edge. Another way would be to play to the look of the slightly rough texture and paint it look like beaten bronze/copper.

Aw thanks guys. Especially you positively characterizing my crappy coating of green stuff on the shield as beaten battle damage lol. I'll pretend I planned it that way.
Yeah it definitely needs something else on the edge. But unless I am copying a much better artist by using a press mold green stuffing is out. Wondering if a different or just darker color painted near the edge would work, either as a solid ring or a fade from dark to light or light to dark or whatever. That I could probably manage lol
