Alongside gaming, another hobby is photography so I decided that I will take advantage of having equipment around and try to learn a bit more about video work, as it is (in my opinion) a better way to showcase a model. With that in mind, and having never really played with video before, I picked up a bit of cheap kit off eBay so I can try it out, and this is the result.

I just picked a random model from my collection to start off the experiment, and after looking at the first bit of footage I added the border as I generally don't like a lot of empty space, although I am aware that borders can prove distracting.

lessons I have learned so far:

- Record for longer. This one started a little further round than I would have liked due to having to crop out camera shake, and a couple of extra rotations would have allowed me to pick and choose the start point better
- Clean the model and stand before filming!

Any other opinions welcome!

If you want more people to actually look at your work, stick to photos.

Video is irritating. The quality of the image generally isn't as good, and for those browsing at work or on mobile devices, viewing them in the first place isn't always an available option.

Thanks for the comment, once I get to the stage where I have models I plan to showcase I will certainly be working primarily with photos as they are far better for showing details. I just like videos as a good way to get a feel for a model, and personally feel it compliments a good set of photos.

I have a fair amount of experience with regular photography so I know the results I'll be able to get. This is more of an experiment as I want to improve my skills with video editing and presentation, look for areas I need to focus on and learn from my mistakes.

The green splatter around the video was a bit much, and the volume of the music could have been lower.

Other than that, I thought it was a pretty good video overall.

While I agree with Insaniak that photos tend to be better on the whole than video-- turntable video allows for a 360 view of the model, which is something that most photo uploaders don't take the time to do. They shoot from the front, and maybe 1 side and call it a day.

Great feedback, thanks. Hadn't even considered music volume, so thats really useful.

I'll probably tone down the border in the future after stepping back and rewatching it, while it does fill the blank areas it might be better filled with something that doesn't draw the eye as strongly.

You make some fair points but from where I'm sitting infront of a computer, wearing a silk suit, being fanned and fed grapes, I find the video bearable.
I'm familiar with that model, there was no conversion and the painting wasn't good enough to make me go, 'OMG stop the presses', but with things I want to see in detail I do find slightly video frustrating.
Not a slight on the op's talent and I think that for that model the rotation speed was fine but for anything other than run of the mill stuff I'd prefer photos.

I know where you are coming from. As I mentioned in the OP, this was a random model choice to test lighting rig and presentation rather than a specific display of that model. Certainly the intention is to use this for models I want to highlight in my collection.

What do people think of the angle? Would it be better shot flatter so that the platform is not visible? My thinking is that this would stop you seeing the base which is why I chose that angle, but is that important?
