I've always wanted to paint an army where each model has it's own paint scheme but before I embark on something like this it'd be cool to see some of the mixed armies out there. I know uniformity definitely gives a good clean look but I can't help but to wonder what a completely mixed army would look like. I can't find anything when I search for examples and I know I can't be the only one wanting to do this. Anyone care to share any mixed paint scheme armies?

I do not have an army like the one you request, nor do I know of any, but one thing to keep in mind while you embark on this quest is that it will really help if your army shared some central motif. Without some shared element, they may just look like a random collection of models. Some sort of theme will help make it a cohesive force, even if things are painted differently. Good luck!

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. Grrr.

the only way i could see you gettin away with this is something like an inquisitorial retinue. i thought about a necromunda style gang, but the one thing gangs usually have its uniformity

According to the fluff new members of the red corsairs keep their old chapter colours and simply paint a red x over the old iconography. Thats one way to go about a mixed scheme army.

One thing you can do is make the bases similar, so at least you have a cohesive element for the whole army if they're all painted differently.

what army are you looking to do???

if you want to go Imperial Guard, Commissar Yarrick led the defenders of Hades Hive during the Second War for Armageddon...
i always thought that would make a cool rag-tag army, combining gangers and guardsmen of all types...
they can be unified by the basing, and some gangers sharing the color schemes of some of the guardsmen, showing that they looted some of their clothes or gear...

cheers

Dark Angels have three different colour schemes:

The Ravenwing, which is black bikers, flyers and speeders

The Deathwing, which is bone white terminators, dreadnoughts and some land raiders

And everything else is green

Eldar maybe?
I've seen some very unique looking ones usually heavily airbrushed, may-be worth a look.

My orks army is kinda like this.

Rather than each individual havign a different colour scheme however, I did each unit from a different clan untill I had badmoons (yellow), goffs (black), Evil Sunz (red) and Deff SKullz (blue) uniformed orks all over the place. Currently working on the trucks for each unit.

I also collect Dark Angels, although these are being stripped right now, I plan to do units form every named successor chapter, the stories often mention units being borrowed from here and there on various campaigns. Even from entirely separate chapters sometimes.

Edit; Actually... does anyone know how Dark Angels successors do their raven and death wings? Still black and white? or the pre-heresy black deathwing? or totally different as per each chapter? .. has this even been defined?

You could do a space marine crusade force where each squad and vehicle is from a different chapter?

Well this definitely gives me some good ideas to start. I like the idea of the different space marines chapters and I agree I'll have to keep the basing the same and look at some sort of motiff the pull stuff together. Thanks everyone!

This information is (kind of) in the 4th ed codex, which I don't have with me at present (but have at home). Basically the whole "Deathwing" and "Ravenwing" shin-dig is unique to the Dark Angels themselves. Their successors tend to mimic the unit company makeup, ergo all of their first company is equipped with terminator armor, but the coloration doesn't deviate heavily from that of the chapter as a whole.

Here is a link to the army I put together as a crusade army. I ended up using chapters derived from imperial fists.

Big fan of the crusade army and the models look great. I think I might try something similar. Thanks for posting that!

Don’t all the Imp Fist successors get together periodically for championship fights? To figure out who the greatest swordsman/champion/etc is? Would be fun if there was a xenos incursion the next system over from the festivities...
