Subject: Minotaurs as Codex Space Marines or Grey Knights?
|

Hey Dakka,
Recently I've wanted to paint up and play a Minotaur list. I was thinking of running them as space marines which they are intended to be but cant seem to find chapter tactics or a list that I feel would really work for them. I had the idea of running them as grey knights, which I thought would be interesting with the new codex and all.
I just wanted to know your thoughts.
My opponent usually plays orks (blob with heavy mech thrown in) and is really hard to beat.
Please let me know.

Forge world do chapter tactics and characters for the minotaurs, check them out:

Have you been running them as SM in the past where you can't beat your Ork opponent?

I've seen the forgeworld chapter tactics and I didnt think that they lent anything particularly good or any real flavor to the chapter.
Yea I've been running salamanders in the past and his tank busters have been utterly destroying my armies.
I've tried to avoid drop pod lists as I dont like to bring a lot of cheese and drop pods tend to piss off my opponent. I know grey knights get a lot of flak but Im hoping to run a list that isnt packed full of termies.

That's completely understandable, Minotaur chaper tactics are pretty meh.
Why does using drop pods piss off your opponents, can't they beat them? haha
Drop pod lists aren't cheesy in my opinion as it is a perfectly valid strategy that is the iconic way that SM deploy into battle. I don't know anything about grey knights unfortunately but if you don't want to hurt their feelings maybe a mixed SM list could work. So 3 drop pods with sternguard and tacs or ironclads then the rest of your army moves up the board on foot or in transports?

Its not that he cant beat em, its as he say "me dropping on turn one to destroy his favorite unit ruins his personal narrative". Which I think is bs but Im trying to be understanding haha.
That could work. Though it wouldnt save me too much on money as my list is pretty minimal right now.

Haha tell him unfortunately 'his personal narrative' is irrelevant and he if can't deal with the threats you put forward then he should change his list or develop ways to protect his favourite unit
Ok that's no problem, what do you currently own then we can build on that and hopefully produce a decent list. Is it just his orks you play or will the list have to take on lots of different armies?

Its his orks mostly, and some imperial guard but hes a lot easier to deal with.
I have three drop pods. 2 groups of tac squads with melta and mutli-melta. And a unit of 5 sterguard with vulkan.

As a person who runs Salamanders frequently, not having drop pods seems completely alien to me.
Having Vul'Kan (so the melta weapons are TL too) and everything with either flamers or melta in drop pods seems to be the only way I can think of playing with Salamanders. I simply find their CT too weak if they are used in any other way.
As to the topic though, if I where to run a Minotaurs army, I would run them as Codex Space Marines, as either either Imperial Fists or Iron Hands. The are AFAIK specialized in siege warfare and brings lots of warmachines to the fight. I personally don't think the Grey Knights are fitting, because they are few in numbers and all about pyskers, which seems to be nearly the opposite of what the Minotaurs are.

Wouldn't his personal narrative have him winning every time? Ruining that should actually be your goal I would think.

This guy sounds like a bit of a douche, so i now really want you to curb stomp his army. I like Zewrath think full drop pod lists are brilliant and i am just about to start my own complete drop pod army.
So 3 pods is a good start, i think the alpha strike should be melta to knock out his heavy mech first and ruin his 'personal narrative' So maybe 2 tactical squads with MM, MG and CM or switch one for sternguard with CM. IF you wanna go full drop pod just add more of those and some assault squads with 2 flamers in pods.
If not maybe a TFC or 2 to thin his horde, Some stormtalons for AA/Ground attack, more tacticals in rhinos for bolter fire? SM have a lot of flexibility in their unit roster so you can pick and choose a large variety of units.
