So I have been putting a battle wagon together tonight and later when I got home I have a headache. Now I was using gorilla glue, so I have to ask... Is the glue vapors deadly while putting models together?

"Yes, and I'm tired of thinking otherwise."

Not sure about deadly, although i cant imagine its good for your health.

Would it seriously affect me, or would it be something else?

I'm not huffing it, but I am pretty close to it as I glue.

It will probably have a warning about working in a ventilated area whilst using it.

Any fumes are bad in a confined space.

We don't have gorilla glue here (afaik) - so what is it generally used for? Is it a solvent plastic bonding agent - like polystyrene/ABS/PVC 'adhesives', but thicker?

If so, then yes, the solvent fumes won't be good for you, and you really SHOULD be doing it in a ventilated area - with no flame or ignition sources nearby (as the solvents tend to have combustible fumes).

As to deadly? That is a matter of concentration and exposure. I've used a 3.5% toluene solvent glue on plastic models for about 35 years - and have no ill effects from it - but I follow the directions. Toluene is a nasty chemical solvent.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

There is not this idea.

Seconding always staying in a well ventilated area. And if you find yourself getting a headache, go out and get some fresh air.

I guess that's common sense, I'll ask my gw manager if the place is well ventilated. Wisconsin is not known for keeping doors open year round though.

Should I get a mask to cover my mouth and nose?

Headaches are so common though that it may just be the correlation/causation thing... If youre dehydrated could cause a headache. Blood sugar a little low or youre hungry, possible headache. Now gorilla glue does have some fumes to it, but if you arent huffing it or in a small room with it for hours you should be fine. And even if you are, or you are just sensitive to that particular vapor, its not deadly except in massive quantities.

If you mean Gorilla Super Glue, then it's just their branded Superglue and some people are sensitive to it. You should set up a fan in your workspace to blow the fumes away and a mask might not hurt. You don't need to ask your GW manager if the shop is well ventilated. For these purposes, it isn't.

I'd just change to something. Loctite doesn't have any issues and hasn't given my models any issues. Plastic glue can also be fine. In general though, what concentrations are you using it in that it's enough to even notice?

Actually Gorilla Glue does have a different formulation than 'standard' superglues.

True enough Ghaz, Gorilla Superglue is my go to glue when it comes to modelling. My point is that as a cyanoacrylate glue, some people tend to have sensitivities to it.

And my point is that it's not just a rebranded cyanoacrylate glue. It does have a different formula containing tiny rubber particles which may affect some more than a standard cyanoacrylate glue would.

Regardless, plastic glue is better for plastic models, IMHO.

It won't kill you, but the fumes will certainly eradicate a few brain cells. If you're doing it in an enclosed space, take breaks and get fresh air. Might get a hella nasty headache otherwise.

I realize this isn't really the place, but as everyone is talking about glues I'd appreciate getting a quick answer of my own: Any particular glues that you guys would recommend for working with resin, particularly gluing resin / resin, resin / plastic together?

Thanks in advance, and other than this one post I won't go OT further.

Super glue after giving the resin a good cleaning & making sure that the parts have a very good fit (using files & putty).

As for masks - the cheap ones are basically useless after about 1/2 hour due to the moisture from your breath. Note that this is for germs & pollution but it may be the same for glue fumes.

As a side note: once I was making a balsa wood glider. The wings & body need to be covered by tissue paper. This is stuck, shrunk & stiffened using stuff called 'dope'. It smells like banana essence. I was using it in my very small bedroom. When I came out after an hour or so, it's safe to say I was pretty much wasted! Luckily it didn't do any lasting damage.

Did anyone just see that pink rabbit run past the screen??
