Hi everyone,

I just got my hands on some nids and I would like to add to them for a hard hitting 1000pts. I've got two different groups of friends I play with, one is full on, the other is fun and fluffy.
I'm struggling to find the cheese, any help would be great. I don't mind buying any model at this point

So far I have

1 Flying Hive Tyrant
2 Lictors
1 Zaonthrope
10 Terms
20 Horms
8 Genestealers and Broodlord
3 Warriors
3 Swarm bases
1 Carni
1 Mowloc

Go on Ebay.

Sell your Tyranids.

Buy six wave serpents, twenty Dire Avengers, ten Fire Dragons and a Farseer.

You now have an ubercompetitive list.

couldn't he play unbound with just the skyblight formation, it wouldn't be uber eldar tier, but some armies may have problems with multiple hive tyrants.

Bud, your looking in the wrong place for advice. Go to list building or tactics. Tactics has an entire 175+ page thread going on Comp 'Nids that people can help you out in.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Here's a good base:

Flyrant with 2xTLBL Devs, electroshock grubs
Flyrant with 2xTLBL Devs, electroshock grubs

-stock HQ. No better choices.

venomthrope x2
zoanthrope

-can mix the numbers here a bit. Malanthrope is actually straight-up better, but he's forgeworld.

termagants w/devourers OR deepstriking rippers if playing maelstrom

-troops to taste.

carnifexes with 2x TLBL Devs
Mawloc

good formations are skyblight, and living artillery node (biovores are really good!)

Tyranids can be competitive, but the builds tend to be a bit one-dimensional. At the moment the main choices seem to be skyblight vs. LAN, and gants vs. rippers...

Skyblight Formation
2 more Flyrants
2 Ripper swarms with Deep Strike
As many Shrikes as you can fit in for extra Synapse.

Add Gargoyles to Skyblight until you're at your points level. 2000+ is best. That's as competitive as it gets and do you see how boring it is?

Go to Frontlinegaming.org and read everything by InControl. Also go and read JY2's BAO tournamentreport here on Dakka. That should give you a good idea about what strong Tyranid lists have.

Start with getting a second Flyrant.

Double Devourers and Electroshock Grubbs (that's the name of the Haywire flamer, right?) on both.

For Troops, Rippers with Deep Strike. You have enough for one unit. Start there. Second Troop unit should be your Genestealers. Minimum unit with a Broodlord. This guy is your Warlord. Their job is to hide. This frees up both Flyrants to go out and get gak done without worrying about giving up points.

For the remaining 400 or so points, you can start by experimenting with the Carnifex (with double Devourers) and the Mawloc and the two Lictors, but you may want to begin thinking about the following options:

- Two Tyrannofexes with two templates each, running up the field.

- Tervigon, 30 Gants, 2 Venomthropes.

- 1 Zoanthrope (for backfield Synapse), 1 Venomthrope and as many Biovores you can squeeze in.

Most "ultracompetitive" tyranid builds revolve around flyrants, skyblight formation, and deep striking rippers.

The Malanthorpe is also pretty amazing, so if your tournament scene allows for FW I suggest getting 2.

Are you telling me that I don't need to take any Primary Detachment, only Formations? Because I totally missed that if so. And now I have to go rewrite my tournament list.

Depends on the venue, but Per BRB RAW that is indeed correct for the question your trying to ask. You are not quite asking the right question though, it should "Are you telling me I don't have to take a CAD?". If you just run Skyblight, for example, it will be by default be your Primary.

Cheese is a strong word for the Tyranid codex. The closest thing to cheese is probably the flying hive tyrant. Give him 2 brain leech devourers as well as the electroshock grubs thorax biomorph. Weighs in at 240 points and is the standard kit for tyranids. It might seem like a lot but they are good at literally everything and rather durable because they should almost never have to land, but can if they need to late game. The swarms that you have are now good because they can score (and have objective: secured due to being troops). 7th edition removed the restriction preventing swarms from scoring. Some lists run these, and some run gant squads to screen the bigger guys behind them. Neither is bad, but they do different things. The swarms can deep strike for 6 extra points for a unit of 3, which gives you a lot of tactical flexibility so I prefer them. However if you want to run a number of Carnifexes, you may very well want the gants to give the Carnifexes a 5+ cover save. This is boosted by the Venomthrope, giving shrouded to any units with a model within 6". The malanthrope is an even better version of the Venomthrope, but it is forge world. I actually like the Mawloc a lot. It is the definition of hit or miss. When it misses, it doesn't do much. But when it hits, it is devastating. I like it but it probably isn't hyper-competitive because in a tournament you want reliability, not randomness.

Other things you could consider are skyblight, and the Living Artillery node. I ran skyblight in 6th but it's a huge financial investment to get started and probably not much (if at all) better than running a bunch of flying hive tyrants. Finally, I don't know if your gaming group feels warm and fuzzy about Lords of War, but a Barbed Hierodule puts out a lot of pain, fills a void in the tyranid army, and is rather durable.

Not to be that guy, but trying to follow that thread is a nightmare, especially if you haven't been along for the ride and are simply seeing a 177 page thread The first post has some initial thoughts on units, but "how to make an ubercompetitive list" is a slightly more specific question than "look at this 177 page general tactics thread".

The boring thing about this particular competitive spam list is that it's mostly flying monstrous creatures. I find it more of a meta-shaking list, you're simply taking more flying things than most people bring AA to take out. It'll break down quite quickly if your opponent brought sufficient AA or you fail a few grounding tests on your flyrants.

Devourer Weapon are really good on low attack character, and brain leech devourer on monster creature are really good aswell. More devilgaunt the better. You can use naked hormagaunt for close combat before sent in genestealer to mop up the bigger and stronger enemy unit.

Scare of overwatch? Buy 10 hormagaunt for suicide unit before sent in full broods of hornagant Right after resolve the overwatch and watch your opposition eye watered as watching enemy unit was washed out! You will need 1 kg of dices...
