So after some consideration and list building advice, I think I've decided on a direction to go in. Hope I get some good feedback on this list for a kind of TAC approach to Tyranids.

Single CAD, no LoW, one formation, 1850 points

HQ:
Hive Tyrant, Wings, dual twin linked devourers, eGrubs

Hive Tyrant, Wings, dual twin linked devourers, eGrubs

Elites:
Malanthrope

Venomthrope

Troops:
13x hormagaunts

13x hormagaunts

Fast Attack:
10x gargoyles

10x gargoyles

Heavy Support:
2x Carnifex, dual twin linked devourers

2x Carnifex, dual twin linked devourers

Living Artillery Node:
Exocrine
3x Biovores
3x Warriors, Venom Cannon

LAN sits in cover (preferably ruins) in the backfield with the venomthrope to provide long range fire support. Exocrine will probably have to move up with Fexes to get in range unless the enemy comes to me. Malanthrope goes with the fexen, screened by gargs and gaunts to provide better cover saves and hopefully preferred enemy at some point in the game. Hive Tyrants do their thing, shooting up the place and providing psychic backup and synapse where there might be holes in the coverage.

Two Flyrants are a must at higher points levels.

Zoanthropes are a good call for Psyker defence and more chance to get Onslaught for Dakkafexes.

The Tervigon isn't competitive, took too many nerfs and with everything scoring now, along with non-OS spawned Gaunts, not much point paying it, except for die hard Nidzilla lists.

At 1500 I would probably run two Flyrant, minimum Termagants, Malanthrope, two Zoanthropes and 2 units of 2 Dakkafexes and for 1850, replace Malanthrope with Venomthrope and have the Living Artillery formation.

So what about a list like this for 1850
HQ:
Hive Tyrant, Wings, TL Devs, eGrubs

Hive Tyrant, Wings, TL Devs, eGrubs

Elites:
Malanthrope

Venomthrope

Heavy Support:
2x Carnifex, TL Devs

2x Carnifex, TL Devs

Living Artillery node:
3x Warriors with Venom Cannon
3x Biovores
Exocrine

Troops:
25 termagants with 15 devourers

If I have all the points cost right that leaves 90 points. I could take another min unit of termagants and a Zoan. I could also put Hive Commander on one of the tyrants to outflank my devilgants and take a min 5 man unit of stealers to infil on an objective and play drop-n-pop go to ground games with. I could take 2x3 rippers with Deep Strike. Or I could just fill those last 90 points with Hormagaunts, taking 18 of them to just run up the field or 14 with Hive Commander on a Tyrant to outflank them or the devilgants. Barebones Warriors are an option but not a very good one at that...

So, is the rest of the army mostly good, and which secondary troops choice should I take?

Personally I tend to keep my troops cheap as, two units of 10 Termagants w/ Spinefists (I enjoy TL) and go to town on the rest of the FOC slots.

With your list, I would take some Hormagaunts to shield the Carnifexes and give them 3+ Cover (with Thrope Shrouded).

Zoanthropes are a good call, but you'll ideally want to split them into minimum units if you take more than one as you get more WC.

If you're looking to Outflank, Termagants with Devourers (ideally 30 Devourers) are what work best - 90 S4 will destroy infantry.

I think I'm going to run with hormagaunts for troops. I like the way they look and they're our fastest troops choice outside of deep striking rippers. And those don't really do anything except sit on objectives. Hormies can tarpit most anything in the game and can even chop up some guardsmen or cultists or other squishy objective holders in CC. Especially on the charge when such a unit is pinned and already weakened by Biovore/Venom Cannon blasts.

I'm not going to take a lot of Homagaunts though. Close to minimum. Two units of 10-15.

Now I just need to decide what to do with my last 150 points. I'm considering taking a Hive Crone for some extra anti air or a Mawloc for some more AP2 but my gut instinct says I should just take two units of 10 gargoyles to clog up the board a little bit and tarpit even more.

Taking barebones gargs would also give me enough space to fit 26 barebone gaunts beefing up each of the two units a little so they don't keel over as soon as someone looks at them.

Only playtesting will reveal how effective this is though.

I will update the original post with a more finalized list

Updated list looks good. Personal changes I would make are to change the Hormagaunts into two units of ten Termagants which gives you enough points for a Zoanthrope if I calculated that correctly for more Psychic Defence, WC and an increased chance to get Onslaught or Catalyst on the Carnifexes.

I love Zoanthropes though but for other people they aren't their cup of tea, so I wouldn't blame you for keeping the Hormagaunts.

I got discouraged from the living artilelry list due to the warriors not getting objective secure since they aren't part of your main FOC, I still love the exocrines and the biovores and still enjoy the warriors but the warriors are just barely good now, if you take away their OS then even the re-roll scatter dice doesnt make up for it in my opinion, especially since this counts as your extra FOC and would avoid you being able to take an additionnal FOC
