I recently got the Dark Vengeance set and I plan on playing vanilla Space Marines, what DA units could I take and convert into vanilla space marines, and how?

You can convert all of them to vanilla marines.

The only thing that makes them not vanilla in the first place is the iconography. Either scrape it off, or just make up a new chapter with Angels in the name

Just get a good sharp blade and some sanding sticks to remove the iconography. I've used them for filler for tac squads and conversions. Used the Libby for my sarpedon. Waiting on another one to get here to chop up for a mutant sarpedon.

I just painted them up without shaving any of the icons and explain it as veteran markings and whatnot. I've seen a lot of people file of the icons but some go as far as to entirely replace the shoulder pads which seems overly complicated.

If this is your first army, I'd recommend just painting them up without scraping off the icons. It's very time consuming and if you don't have experience you'll probably just make them look worse rather than better.

Have you picked a chapter you want to use? If not, I'd suggest just making up a chapter, the XXXXX angels, and keep the Dark Angels iconography while painting them a different colour.

Instead of painting the marines green, the terminators cream and the bikes black, paint them all in the same scheme of your chosen colour.

IMO that will look better than trying to scrape off iconography, especially if you're new to the game.

I agree with skink (I was going to initialise your name, decided against it)

Pick a successor from the Unforgiven and keep the iconography

That said, there is no reason why you couldn't just paint them any colour you want and make that a successor chapter.

If you are hell bent on getting rid of the iconography, I'd really be tempted to swap someone for AOBR marines or something

I'm working on a project doing this myself, converting Dark Angels into Ultramarines. If the client wasn't paying me so much I would never do it. It's... tricky, at best. Converting the bikes is actually the easiest part, the Ravenwing icons are actually smaller and easier to remove.

If you're bound and determined to do it, DO NOT assemble the minis before removing the iconography. I assembled one as a test... big mistake.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.
