So, having finally "completed" my Grey Knights and Tyranid purchases (IE, owning everything I plan to own conceivably, for the time being), I am figuring out where to spend my dedicated "hobby" dollars next. My thought is that I will be helping my wife flesh-out her Orks collection with options for list-building.

She owns...

- More Slugga/Shoota Boyz than I can conceive of
- 3 Trukks
- 2 War-Wagons
- 10 Deff Koptas
- 1 Deff Dread
- 3 Killa Kanz
- An unassembled box of the jet-pack looking fellows
- Several Warbosses in Mega-Armor

- We have enough extra bits to rip the arms off of excess Boyz, and make... oh... 10-20 Burna Boyz or Tankbustas

What would be some good purchases for her? I know 3-5 Manz are on the shopping list already.

How should we built the heavy-weapons Orks? (Burnaz or Tankbustas?)

Lootas still a good choice?

Stompa? (Since our meta loves bringing Knights and assorted ultra expensive Lords of War)

Thanks all!

Priority list, balanced for Hobby and Tabletop Fun:
1) You've got the MANz on your list already. The plastic kits are great, and the hands are interchangeable. There are a LOT of bitz in that box. They'll be fun to put together. And you've got the Trukks to Rokkit dem into da fight on the tabletop. This is my highest recommendation for a combined Ork hobbyist/gamer.

2) Stompa. Hands down a fun project and a great centerpiece model. It's expensive, but it'll be a solid fit to any Ork force. Even Speed Freakz have had some of these tiny little Gargants in their fluff. It's one of the more balanced Superheavies in the game, and Imperial Knight players LOVE fighting against them in my experience. The figure is also very airbrush friendly, if you're into that. Not my top recommendation simply because of the pure amazingness that is the MANz kit, and the fact that this is a bigger project.

3) I would turn Boyz into Tankbustaz. They are solid thanks to the buffs they received this edition, Burnaz were nerfed hard, and well... tankhamma!! Use a big choppa, cut off the axe head. Apply Rokkit. Tankhamma!!

4) More HQs. The new Ork book reaffirms the importance of characters in Ork armies. So, having a Painboy and Mek or two is a good thing. Tip: Konvert Boyz into these two figures. Cut off a choppa head, stick a clipped paper clip or pinning rod into the handle after drilling a hole in it, and you get a great 'urty Syringe in a great pose. Put on a grinning Ork for best effect. Remember, Orks would rather lose an arm than visit the Dok!

5) Mek Gunz, while expensive, look amazing and are one of the better items in the Ork book right now. Some players recommend buying a Mek Gun kit and a Trukk kit at the same time... then kitbashing the two boxes together to make 3-4 gunz. A complex project for sure, but the end results can be amazing.

6) Consider getting some Fortifications. It requires the Stronghold Assault book to play with them, but they can be used by any army. Nothing protects your models like a fort. The Firestorm Redoubt is popular these days, as well as the cheap Imperial Bunker.

Notes:
Lootaz are OK but I wouldn't put them high on the priority list. They're kind of average in terms of appearance. People will look at them and shed tears of terror before looking at the details. They're solid on the tabletop, but typically are just visual noise due to the sheer amount of weapons the models have strapped to them.

Bikes are great... but this is a devoted project to undertake to get tabletop-standard squads, both in money and in hobby effort. I cannot recommend them easily for this reason.

Stormboyz are cool, but are basically just Boyz with Rokkits that Explode tied to them on the tabletop. I would reuse the Rokkits for other purposes. (TANKHAMMAAAA)

Well, my wife enjoys having the army, and playing it... but the hobby stuff is left to me.

To date, everything she has is painted to a fairly high standard, and she lovingly ordered "Porks" (Pink-skinned Orks) from me, which I have done. I enjoy doing the fun hobby work and she loves the result so we both with.

... It also means the heavy lifting is left to me, so I don't mind buying projects I will enjoy doing.

So far today, based on the thread, i've ordered a box of Mega Armor Nobs, and a Stompa. :-p

I'm also vaguely curious about the Trukk + Mek Gunz combo purchase. I assume you use a set of wheels per Gun, and just kit-bash a "gun emplacement" atop it? If I could end up with four Gunz for her, for $70... it would be fine, and a fun project... but ye Gods, I am NOT buying 3 or 4 of the actual GW kits at that price... Especially when the Stompa w/online discount was $90 shipped for a giant-box of awesome. :-p

I'll take what I have in all my list as suggestions:

3-5 Mega nobz
30 Stormboyz with 1 nob power klaw (I always go full sized unit)
15 bikers with 1 nob power klaw (I always go full sized unit)
1 Painboy on bike
4 Kustom mega kanon
4 Lobbas
These get arround 1100-1200pts approximativelly.

You already have boyz and trukks, so you can fill up your troops with 2 heavy armored trukk boyz unit, give another trukk to your meganobz

We should be around 1500-1600pts of a core, fast army. (note that this is, give or take a few things, my usuall 1500pts list with a warboss added in)

For your heavy weapon orks, I would go with 10 to 15 Tankbustas + 3 bomb squig and put them in one of the battle wagons with 2 missiles launcher + 1 kannon.

For the lootas, If you need to deal with flyers, I think you could go with the internet wisdom of using lootas, but I don't often need to deal with flyers. When I do, I'll usually add an Aegis defense line in front of my heavy support KMK/Lobbas or 1 or 2 dakka jet.

For the stompa, I can't say, I don't play with super heavies.

Anyways, the first part of my answer is what is always in my list and I would consider solid core.

The Trukk comes with six wheels, the Mek Gun kit comes with two. Two wheels per gun equals four guns. There are a lot of 'flat' pieces you can use for platforms to place the guns on in both kits, as well as many front gun defensive wall bitz (u-shaped pieces), plus enough Bitz to make all the gunz truly orkified. Considering the Mek Gun has one of every gun, you should have gun bitz to spare. If you need gun bodies/barrels, go find some coffee stirrer straws, or even just full sized straws. Kannonz/Lobbaz are pretty generic so you can probably improvise multiples of both as a result. Perhaps magnetize the gun bitz so you can change them out.

The downsides to this method are that the trukk wheels are a little bit larger, there is a lot of kitbashing knowledge required, you will not get your Grotz with the purchase, and your final gunz may be a little lacking compared to a fully fleshed out $46 gun.

Before you order, google Trukk Sprue and Mek Gun Sprue, and check out what pieces you will be getting. You can make a rough plan around both.

Personally, since I'm a true Ork, I'm actually in the process of using dollar store tires (yoyo wheels, they're about the size of a 40mm base and therefore are too big, but I'll make it work...), wooden cav bases, wire, straws, greenstuff, my trusty rotary tool, and random ork bitz from my box to get together some more Gunz. Have you ever had to fight an almost entirely FMC army before? I have. It makes me desire having a ton of Traktor Kannonz.

Anyway, enjoy the MANz and Stompa!

Piggy backing on your custom mek guns conversions.. I used these two models I found on amazon as cheap bases for mek gunz. Still working on them.. but With some plasticard/kitbashing a trukk kit.. you can get TONS of mek gunz.

Orks are probably the only race where you can literally do whatever the hell you want and pull it off if you know what youre doing.

She has the collection started for two different lists, either green tide (since you cant count that high) or wagon rush. Battlewagons are one of the more common tactics, probably only outshined by Warbikers in popularity. Ideally you want 3 of them before you field them though, but at lower points 2 is fine (no more than 1500pts i'd say).

However, regardless of the list, she needs some mek gunz and bikes. A mek on bike with a KFF is heavily desired to protect the wagon rush, since KFF doesnt spread between vehicles anymore if the mek is inside it. I usually put him in a 5man Deffkopta bubble with bigshootas - they surprise me every game actually. Warbikers work great in wagon lists too if you got the points.

Mek-gun wise, its a tossup if kannons or lobbas are better for the cheap-variant, and generally Kustom Mega Kannons are the only special mek gun that people like. I use lobbas and they clear infantry with ease, and 5 gunz for 90pts is just full of win lol

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.
