Some years ago (maybe 2007-2009) I bought a Citadel Tank Brush, which has served me well for all manner of models. It is starting to show its age, though, so I thought it was about time to buy a replacement. However it seems that GW no longer sell a brush of this size and shape. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a replacement of similar size and shape from another brand?

For those who don't know: this was a large, round brush which was fairly firm with a width of probably 1/4 of an inch. A bit like a version of the current Citadel Large Drybrush. I don't particularly want a Large Drybrush because of the shape; the Tank Brush was also significantly larger and firmer than the Citadel Large and Wash brushes.

The easiest thing to do is take your brush to a fine art store (or even a Michael's or A.C. Moore) and find a brush that closely resembles it.

I've never used a GW tank brush, but it is probably something like a flat or filbert brush.

Army Painter has something similar. Its from the Wargamer line - Vehicle and Scenery brush. I have one, and I think it cost like $10. I use it for dry brushing bases and larger stuff.

it is actually a Round Synthetic, Scooty...

DickBlick has a huge amount on show on their website if you want to use that to find the one you like, and then search your local shops for something similar...

funny enough, i still have a pristine tank brush after more than ten years, since i only use it for dusting my minis before i start painting each night...
i hate painting with synthetics, but love the tank brush as a duster...

Why would you spend $10 on a brush to drybrush with?
I don't spend that on sable detail brushes.

A tank brush would be the equivalent of at least a dozen detail brushes.

Fair enough. Like I said, I've never used one and for that matter I never would.

I made my estimate based off my memory of seeing one in my FLGS a couple of years ago.

P3 makes a large synthetic round brush. I picked one up at my FLGS on sale for less than $10, but I must confess that I've never found a use for it. As someone pointed out, Michaels (with a 40% or 50% coupon!) is not a bad way to go for a large round brush. They vary tremendously in price; basically, you get what you pay for.

If you need a really high quality large round, you can always go Winsor & Newton Series 7 from DeSerres or Dickblick -- but you'll pay through the teeth for it.

The thing to bear in mind is that nothing GW offers is genuinely original, so if you liked one of their products and they have dropped it from their range, you will easily find the equivalent from other sources, probably cheaper and sometimes better.

The tank brush I recall was just a wide, flat, fan shaped brush. You can pick up a brush like that from any good graphic arts shop, or of course from the Internets.

Thanks for the tips, guys. These comments were helpful. Talys, I think this is the brush you mention: http://privateerpress.com/content/large-drybrush Would you be able to tell me how big the bristles are (length and diameter)? It's hard to tell from the photo.

darefsky, it looks like the 'Army Painter Wargamer: Vehicle & Scenery' brush is flat, not round. http://shop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=6 Is that correct? It's a round brush I am after. Based on Kilkrazy's comment, perhaps there was also a flat/fan Citadel Tank Brush at some time that I'm not aware of (but mine is round.)

Scooty, etc: I looked at Michaels but the brushes I found there of similar size were mostly very soft - I want something stiffer, like the Tank Brush was, so I was guessing that another wargames company might make something that wouldn't necessarily be sold in art stores.

that PP one looks exactly like the GW Tank Brush sitting on my desk right now...
you can always shoot an email to customer service, and ask if it is synthetic, that way you get the stiff bristles that you want...
