One Canoptek Scarab in a Swarm

Hello!

I had a unit of 2 wraiths on a hill, and my friend assaulted these with a bunch of orks.

The hill was built in a way that it was only possible for my friend to place one attacker on it physically, which came into b2b-contact. The others stayed on the ground below the hill, but were still within 3" from the model that were in b2b-contact.
This gave him a huge advantage, because being unable to move into b2b-contact made him avoid the effect from my whip coils, so he could attack almost with all models at his original initiative.

Did we play it correctly? Should models that cannot physically be placed on the board stay behind like this? Or should the models be considered as they were placed on the unplaceable area, as if they were in b2b-contact even though they physically couldn't be placed exactly there on the board?

We are playing with 7th edition rules.

Thank you in advance!

Pretty much depends how the hill is constructed, was a stepped hill? Was that part of the hill effectively a cliff?

The only rules that really cover this are Wobbly Model Syndrome (page 20), and the ethos of "agree terrain with your opponent before the game begins", which I can't seem to find a page number for in 7th...

Oh Rules, how well you mess up when it comes to verticals as this is what they have to state on the situation:
It is within 2" horizontally and/or 6" vertically of a friendly model in base contact with one or more enemy models in the same combat.
- Determine who can fight

Make what you will out of that, seeing it does not address the hypotenuse, but if your opponents models where 3 inches as stated then they are not 'engaged' and therefore could not attack.

There's a section in the RB where it states that if a wall (like the ADL) keeps models in combat from being in b2b, then count 'em as such. ... Can't find the page # at the moment.

HIWPI:
Your opponent ought to have given you a few b2b orks tangled in whip coils. Let's say if had been 'open terrain' 8 orks woulda been in b2b. Given the hill's slope, count it as half that? Fair?

From here on though, when playing with that hill piece, you could work it out with an opponent before turn 1.

Brothererekose,
There are two that state that, one within Walls and one within Defence Lines, but a hill falls under neither.

Ya should have seen how many could have got base to base then put them where they don't fall over and remember the number. Those are int 1 the rest are normal. Sound gamey to me.

I run a bastion often, and situations like this come into question all the time.

If my unit is on the battlements and against the outside edge, how does the unit below assault? what roll is needed? What happens if the roll is short? Does the attacker stay on the ground? Halfway up the wall stuck in limbo? Every player i play against interprets it differently.

It's 7.25 inches to the floor of the battlements and over 8 to make it over the walls.

The issue isn't if the Roll is short, but what happens when it succeeds...
Yay buildings.
