I got Shadowsun yesterday and I would like to attempt to paint on the 'midway through cloaking' effect occasionally seen on Tau stealth suits.

My plan is to paint the model normally short of wash and highlight, then paint on the camouflaged section, then the electric 'transition' effect, then wash and highlight.

For the transition effect I'm probably gonna do a strip of macragge blue then a smaller strip of lothern blue and finally a line of Ceramite white.

Any tips or advise for attempting this effect?

Thanks!

Somewhere in south-central England.

Although I am not familiar with the GW colours I get the idea of what you are trying to do.

IMO the important thing is to think about how the transition line is rippling across the model. For example, it could be going top to bottom, or bottom to top, or diagonally across from say one shoulder to the opposite hip.

You will want to paint her accompanying drones with exactly the same effect.

I'm gonna run it from left knee to right elbow, hopefully then you'll get a good idea of the colour scheme and the camo

I'm actuall contemplating making a resin cast of a mini in clear resin. Then paint it up partially for that specific effect.

I have my stealth suits painted like that. Black/grey for the camouflaged parts (as its night let's say) and then standard colours for non camp portions.

I believe I used lothern blue, then 50/50 lothern blue and white and then just white. I painted them a long time ago and haven't touched my tau in a while but I think that's what I did.

Apparently I started a thread for how I did mine so here you go. The black/grey area I touched up a bit with better highlights. This gives you a decent idea tho (the furthest picture makes it look darker the black)

Wow, good guide! I'm gonna go for grey dappling for the camo as if its in an urban environment.

If you want to avoid the "turning invisible" clear mini misconception about active camo (well maybe Tau technology bends light, idk) you could build up the base with like a crumbling piece of wall covered in vines and such and then project that background, distorted of course, onto the cloaked part of the miniature with the other half being the paint scheme you want your army to match and the shimmer effect in the middle. Contrast would definitely help here, like @chiefbigredman did with the yellow/black contrast.
