40K has changed greatly over the years.

Here is a list of tabletop game systems for 40K:

We're now in the 7th edition of the main game system, and with each edition there have been numerous expansions, like Crusade of Fire, Death from the Skies etc.

Since we've had nearly three decades worth of the stuff, which 40K game do you think is the best ever?

I liked 4th edition best. The newer additions have some great stuff (like hull points and the new vehicle damage chart), but I consider most changes to be a step backwards with lots of added complexity for very little benefit.

I had a great deal of fun with 2nd edition and I have soft spot for it. I loved the goofier models and the stronger character of the armies in general. I loved modifiers, but the complexity and exploitability kills 2nd edition in the long run.

Space Hulk. It's still the only game that "works".

That said, if forced to choose, I'd take 2nd Edition. Sure, it was wonky and took longer to play, but it was the last version of 40K that could still be considered a "wargame".

I've found I don't care for the "Miniatures game" it turned into nearly as much.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

FFG's games... with the caveat that you will need to re-write it to fit your own group's playstyle.

Though 1st Ed WHFRP, 1st ed, is pretty gonzo... but also hilariously fun.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
