Hey, a question that came up when I was trying to get around the 1 HQ/3 Elites restriction in the Inquisition codex. Is it possible to take additional detachments, or as that is nominally 1HQ/2Troops would that not work? Would it turn over to 1HQ/2Elites?

I think you'd need to take another Inquisition detachment (1-2 HQ, 0-3 Elites), but don't think there's anything to stop you doing just that.

You can take any number, and any type of detachments in a battle-forged army, so you could just take multiple Inquisition detachments (HQ/Elites) and still be battle-forged.

As you've noted, with no troops you can't take a Combined Arms detachment, so if you wanted access to a Lord of War or a Fortification, you'd need to pick up some allies for a CAD (but not an Allied Detachment, as they don't get LoW's or Forts - page 120-122 for more info).

I must have missed something then, was under the impression you get your normal detachment, your allied detachment, and then you get additional detachments of your main force with 1hq/2troops.

What's the difference between an allied detachment and just taking another normal detachment then?

There are two detachments in the main rulebook that are useable by any Faction, but cannot actually be used by 2 (Imperial Knights and Inquisition) as they do not have Troop selections. Instead, they come with their own detatchments (using 6th edition terminology, 'force organization charts') which can be used instead of, or in addition to, the 2 presented in the rulebook. (7th edition codexes are also arriving with unique detachments - Orks, GK's etc.).

Check out page 122 of the rulebook for the differences between a Combined Arms Detachment (the 'default' / 'ordinary' / 'FOC' detachment) and an Allied Detachment (main restriction is that it can't be the same Faction as your Primary Detachment).

Some examples of legal battle-forged armies:
One CAD (Primary - Space Marines - Ultramarine Chapter Tactic, 1 HQ, 2 Troops), one Allied Detatchment (Dark Angels, 1 HQ, 1 Troops), one Inquisition Detachment (1 Inquisitor, 1 Warband).
One CAD (Primary - Dark Angels, 1 HQ, 2 Troops), one CAD (Chaos Space Marines, 1 HQ, 2 Troops), Tau Fire Support Cadre Formation (1 Riptide, 3 units of Broadsides).
Three Inquisition Detachments (Each 1 HQ, one is the Primary), Allied Imperial Knight Detachment (1-3 Knights).
Primary IK Detatchment (1-3 Knights), Inquisition Detachment (Each 1 HQ), 2x Imperial Assassin Dataslates, Legion of the Dammed Detachment (1 unit of LotD).

Primary IK Detatchment (3-5 Knights),

This is incorrect. As per the FAQ, each IK detachment is 1-3 Knights of any type.

in 6th you could take 3-5 knights in a Knight primary detatchment and 1-3 in allies.

Now each knight detatchment is 1-3 knights. If for example a tournament limited you to 2 detatchments, you could not even take 4 knights and a CAD any longer.
