Hey all

I've got a match against my friends Dark Angels in a couple of weeks, they are going to be closed list but I'm dead set on taking Sanguinary Guard.

I was thinking of taking 1 Power Axe 1 Power Fist and adding a Sanguinary Priest with a Power Axe to help with surviability a little bit.

What are your thoughts? Does anyone take Death Masks? Or a Chapter Banner?

Thanks in advance

Death Masks are too expensive and Chapter Banner is really situational.

A Priest is a good idea and a single PF can never hurt. I think that you'll do fine with that setup.

Definitely take the Priest, every boost to their durability helps. I'd also take the banner, as with the low squad size limit, it's the only way to increase their damage output to a much higher level. Be sure that the Banner Guy dies last to make the most of it. Is take a Fist, and swords where possible, as the last thing you want to be facing is Terminators as, model for model, they'll kill you dead, so there's no point in trying to fight them with when, with double their speed, you can avoid them.

1 fist, 2 axe and 2 sword is ok. With priest with power sword, as in a sang guard unit there is no-one to take his challenges. If you want to save points, run him with basic weapons and just deny challenges. Banner is a good shout against DA as they will also be low model count in PA or TA (so the extra attack can really help smash a unit).
As to tactics - don't deepstrike unless he plays an unsupported dev unit/tank in his back field, and run them in cover down a flank if possible so as few enemy units can target them as possible. Stay away from termis where possible as they will rip you a new one since SG have no invuln. Use them to chase down bikes and harras tactical/devestator squads to try and get their points value out of them. With a fist and +1s on all the weapons they will also gut any speeder squadron and most single tanks he has.

Oh and take off the sword bearers first in combat as they will have already hit.

Good points there. Is also add something that seems obvious: get them into CC as fast as is humanly possible. Even if you're just beating up a small Ravenwing, Devastator or Tactical squad, you're going to kill them pretty easily, and faster than most things in your army, so if a charge against anything not in TDA presents itself, go for it.

Cheers guys, one more question would you run a chaplain with them to increase their effectiveness? WS 4 isn't great in today's climate but against normal marines it should be fine I guess.

If you already have a HQ then I'd say no. But if taking it as your compulsory HQ I don't see why not. Although tbf - if you are running an assault squad, I'd say that they would need the chappy more.
