So, I finally caved in and got myself an ipad. I downloaded Battlescribe and finally managed to find and get the data files on it. Now, when I try to create a roster, it freezes. I get to the part where there's bars for HQ, Troops, etc, but you can't do anything. Am I doing this wrong? I mean, it took me over a day to find the data files, so clearly this gak isn't my forte, but this is getting seriously ridiculous. Can anyone walk my dumb ass through this?

Using IOS?
It's definitely been touchy since the last update, both App and OS upgrade.
Also, if someone has done something daft with the data file you're trying to use, that can trip it up too (the Imperial Knights data file I have is fethed all to hell, and I can't see why) so it might not be you.
I'm a long term BS user, and consider myself competent at least WRT computers and such, and it has been a bit sticky with me too.

Well that sucks. I even tried deleting the app, redownloading it, and reinstalling the data files. Am I just SOL then? I really don't want to have to pay money for a roster creation tool, but BS seems to be the only free game in town. (That I could find.)

Stick with it, the creator is usually fairly prompt with updates and patches, and the data creation community is pretty good too, your judgement was good, your timing a little off.

So your app just hangs?
Because at the right side you should see a +, which you can use to add a unit.
Where do you get the datafiles?
I would advice the following source: battlescribedata.appspot.com/#/repos

Mine does that too since IOS8, just close the app (completely, get rid of it from multitasking and everything) and when you re open it, open the roster you just made and you'll be able to use it as usual.

It's a fairly crash-prone program on all platforms I've used it (Windows, iOS and Android)

Yeah, that tends to cause issues.
Try using a computer, battlescribe works ok on it even if the data files are far from perfect.

Far from perfect?
You could always drop some feedback, most things get fixed within a day or two.
At the moment there is a 'feedback drought' because mostly it are posts from people that cannot load a file or are unable to read their own codex and complain when things work differently from what they thought.

Yes, far from perfect.
1. Some armies have no special rules populated (CSM)
2. Most special rules are not in there (I've added at least 15 to my HTML files and that's using mostly the same units)
3. Many units require you to pick an option instead of having a default
4. The format of the HTML files is not usable, much less in the new one. My files have div class page and I had to add some css to remove the "ref" column in the new layout, which made all tables move to the right. That new layout is a failure btw, it takes 10 pages for an army if there are repeated rules, like battle focus or champion of chaos for example.
5. I haven't seen any trace of the USR
Other than that, I'm using it so it's probably not that bad (I'd have made something else if it was too annoying).
So yeah great work anyway, just please focus on those very important points:
1. Having the correct Special Rules
2. Having a USABLE OUTPUT. I keep on having to edit the HTML and I have no idea how non programmers even use it.

You mean the lack of description for USR's?
Stuff like that is always iffy with GW-legal and I personally opted to drop those because I expect players to know what Deep Strike does.
The output format is really lame, I agree.
Whenever I make a list, I always copy it to Word to make it readable.
But that's an issue with Battlescribe itself, the datafiles can't do anything about it.
I don't understand point 1, 2 and 3.
Perhaps I should make a feedback-thread on this website, that might help us.
Although that feedback is only useful if people are actually using our datafiles and not those from others

When the program relies on user created content to function, and is free and also makes the parts of the program required to make the content also available, for free, I find anyone whinging that the content isn't up to their own lofty standards just a teeny bit massively self-entitled.
Don't like it? Change it. Better yet, change it and share it with the community so we can all benefit.
Can't be arsed to get off your backside and do so? Fair enough, but keep schtum about it.

I don't use battlscribe on my ipad but I use it on my nexus 5. I have used it for a while on my computer aswell.
Personally I have never had it hang up or freeze etc on my android device.
I think it may have something to do with the data files in that they may have a bug or something that freezes the program.
I haven't gotten the most up to date 40k files but the one I use works well and I like the print format.

iv gotit oon my ipad and phone and pc, and never had drama, THOUGH i dont have ios8 on my ipad (yet) downloading it now.
its always been pretty solid for me the new version looks mint too. (ipad) so ill give an update re ios88
as to not having all the special rules ( csm) use your codex man. this is an army list builder, you dont want to print 20 pages of rules every time you write a list.
another thing to note, i do run the Pro version, it may be slightly different Automatically Appended Next Post: ImAGeek wrote:It's only done it since the IOS8 upgrade. Hopefully there'll be an update soon.

Doesn't help you, but I've use both Battlescribe and Quartermaster, and I prefer Quartermaster. It's the same price for the premium version (I own both)
http://templates.quartermasterapp.com/#_=_
The templates are updated often, and the best part is that you can update and add rules/units whenever you like if there is a mistake/unit missing all within the app on the fly. You don't even need a template since you can build your own. I've downloaded all the templates and rebuilt them with all the rules included so I don't even need my codex/rulebook anymore.

[Somehow missed this thread... Well, I say "somehow", I was in bed with flu for a week...]
There were two bugs that appeared under iOS 8:
1) The app freezes after creating a new list. You are unable to navigate or click any buttons or anything. Opening an existing list works fine.
2) Occasionally, usually after the device goes to sleep for a while and you later return to BattleScribe, the app would lock up with the loading spinner showing when you try to add or remove something from your list. (This might also occur on older versions of iOS, not just 8).
Both of these are now fixed and 1.14.08 has been submitted to Apple for review. It should be available for download in the next few days.
There is a silver lining: fixing these bugs has also resulted in an unexpected performance benefit, so things should be noticeably snappier when the update comes through.
Thanks for your patience and apologies itβs taken some time to resolve things. These were some tough bugs to pin down!
