So, with my recent acquisition of a job that affords me time to do so, I'm going to see about attending some courses with the overall objective of some sort of degree (I know, right?). So, rather than this just be a random public update of my goals in life, I actually had a couple questions for the assembled Dakka-throng:

First, I've decided that the degree I'm aiming for is going to be in some form of Engineering, not social or biochemical, but more along the lines of mechanical or electrical. Anyone around followed a similar path?

Second, I'm a fan of math, haven't had to do any real heavy stuff as of late but I figure with the path I'm setting for myself there will be. That all having been said, can anyone set the expectation for what sort of mathematical hell I'm in for?

Third, and I guess more importantly, am I crazy for setting my sights on the Mechanical/Electrical side of the Engineering spectrum? Are there any suggestions you all can offer that might make the adventure a little easier or a different path to take once I reach the inevitable crossroads?

So there it is, I guess. I've noticed there are some pretty smart folks that frequent this here forum and I can only assume some of you have taken a similar route with your education (or are currently walking that path, as it were). Any sort of information would be appreciated but I'm not looking for someone to tell me how bad an idea this is truthfully, I'm set in this, I'd just like to have some behind the scenes knowledge before I take the leap.

Currently in my Senior year of Mech Engineering. It is an amazing degree choice, as you will learn a ton of gak.

First, Mech or Electrical is definitely the way to go. Social and computer are fine, but mech and electrical are probably the msot widely applicable for any field.

Second, you will see lots of math. You will probably have to finish through Calc 3, but after that, most of your engineering classes will only deal with stuff through Calc 1 and 2, so be used to that. Derivative, integration, things like that.

Third, I'm biased, but I think Mechanical is by far the best. Electrical is decent, but a little more limited. Social and computer I find too boring, but Mechanical is absolutely the most applicable, and the most diverse. You can take it then go on to any field, even getting an Aerospace minor.

Seriously, engineering is a blast, and Mechanical is definitely the Jack of all trades. You learn a little bit of everything and can go into really any field, so that is my recommendation. Best of luck, comrade

I'm currently working my way into a mechanical engineering degree. Was out of school for 9 years before I went back and had to work back into calculus. Can't really speak to which is better but from conversations with various engineers mechanical is a good way to go. As long as your into math you'll probably be fine. For me it's a huge struggle, so I have to work what feels like twice as hard as my class mates which can get frustrating. Just keep chipping away though and you'll be extremely glad you did.

@jreilly: Good points all, seems to jibe with what I've been reading/hearing. Have you worked in any of the fields that revolve around the degree?

@Chancetragedy: Yeah, I waited a bit too, sort of didn't like the idea of spending any more time in a classroom, even moreso when I found out I had to pay for it. As for math, I've always liked it and can understand it pretty well, but I've got family currently dealing with Calculus and they can't stand it. Here's hoping I haven't lost what little understanding I had, heh.

Not yet, still waiting to graduate. But I just finished a Senior design project, where we worked with a company for a year in a real world setting. It was super interesting and enlightening. I'm hoping to land a job with them when I graduate

Side note, if you struggle with Calculus or anything, look up Khan Academy. They do tons of videos on almost everything

Sounds pretty boss.

I've heard of Khan actually, I was looking over their stuff when I was tasked with helping my sister finish Calculus 1 when she was on her way to her Pharmacy degree.
