I have a big thing of Raw umber pigment from wisor newton i got on clearance

but am having a problem with matching it properly with a good base color.

Any ideas on how to use weather pigments properly with a basic sand base?

Currently using graveyard earth then fixing the pigment over that once dried. the tones dont seem to match well.

Would it be better to paint the sand more rocky grey colors to have contrast? or match the raw umber a bit?
