So they just put up Season 9 on Netflix, and I just finished it maybe an hour ago. I am so mad and disappointed and sad. I haven't felt this betrayed by a story in a long time. Spoilers ahead for sure.
Spoiler:
I could totally accept Ted not going to Chicago. He found The Mother, he realizes he has everything he needs, and the job in Chicago was an excuse, great. Robin and Barney get divorced because they're unhappy. Okay, I hate it, but I can buy it. They still stay friends, they just can never be together. I can accept it.
Then Barney goes back to being a sleaze and knocks a girl up. He realizes the daughter he now has fills his life. Great, I can totally buy that, had they played it off that his new daughter filled his unrelenting sadness for Robin.
Lilly and Marshall felt so bland, they were just side characters. Marshall is a judge, who cares? He turned that down for Lilly to go Italy, but they just GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE?!? Lilly is pregnant, for the third time! I get trying to fill your writing, but why three? The second child at the wedding was perfect, adding enough suspense. The third child added nothing.
Back to Barney, who DOESN'T GET BACK TOGETHER WITH ROBIN. He disappears with his new daughter as a single dad to go do oh who the hell cares, he probably shares her with his real life gay counterpart. They could have written that and it would have been fine.
But no, back to Ted. The girl who was perfect for him, they had everything, had their flaws and redeeming qualities, and everything is great. Then she gets "sick", and dies. She's gone for six years, before they end it with Ted's kids telling him it was all a ruse to ask for permission to date Robin. I called it with my wife before it happened, he shows up at her same apartment with some crappy new hairdo, with her same old dogs, and he's outside holding the DAMN FRENCH BLUE HORN. To hell with it, kill her and Marshall off, then Ted can bang Lilly too!
Seriously I have never felt so betrayed by such a well written and intriguing story. This is almost an exact copy of
Spoiler:
the ending in Dark Tower, but even that felt more well written and with purpose.
The ending just felt cheap and hackneyed. I actually went online and read several newspapers reviews just to make sure I wasn't crazy, to validate my feelings of sadness and betrayal. I'm a reasonable guy, I love story telling as much as anyone, but don't craft great stories, get me invested in your characters, and then gak all over your own story.
I don't know, did anyone else have a similar response? They're supposedly including an alternate ending with the box set, but at this point I'm too annoyed to bother.

Why does every story have to have a happy ending? I'll admit, I'm a sucker for the tragedy genre and 'happily ever after' never did a thing for me, so having the show end the way it did, it made it 'real'. It made the story more important when it ends like it did.
I couldn't really care less about the ending. The show got stale around Season 3 or so, and I was kinda glad it's over, no matter how crappy the ending.
The only reason I kept watching was because Robin (sorry, " Agent Hill") is hot and Barney's antics at least were mildly entertaining.
I said that I had just gotten around to it because they just put it up on Netflix maybe a week ago. I'm sorry I don't have cable and didn't feel like pirating it?

It doesn't have to be a happy ending. But don't take all the character development and throw it out the damn window

I expected this ending. I'm not at all surprised it had happened this way. The kids are right: in hindsight, the entire show was about him and Robin. So when it ends being about Robin...shock? Also, yeah, super late to the party.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
