So I'm looking at my Codex: Dark Angels iBook in preparation for some painting, and noticed something strange. Whenever I tap on a picture a message pops up for a second before the proper picture is displayed. This is a screenshot of it. Did a disgruntled DA player hack into Black Library and do this? Whoever you are, you've pissed me off.

Well I think the picture is too high resolution to add, because it won't work. It's all pink with the words "REPLACE ME" in black.

Edit: OK, I see my lack of tech skills are showing. I knew I hadn't been hacked, I thought it was Black Library that had. Changed the subject name.

I love how people jump on "hack" as an answer whenever something goes slightly wrong with technology.

"My PC is slow, IMA BEIN' HACKED!"

"My email didn't send, IMA BEING HACKED"

"Someone forgot to replace the placeholder text in a codex before uploading it to iTunes! MUSTA BEEN HACKED!"

The image is a place holder image, it means there was an update and someone missed something, seriously...

If it was hacked, they'd not give a damn about the contents of an ibook, its your personal details they'd be after.

Edit: Dammit, ninja'd that's what happens when you stop to make a fuss of a cat.

I guess your right. It didn't do this before. Why would they put it in during an update? The pictures where already there.

Laziness and sloppy work.

unfortunately, not new things when it comes to GW and ibooks.

Or, the device you are using ran out of memory for a while, and couldn't open the picture? The pink bit is the hole in the page it should go, and "Replace me" is a hint to put in a smaller version?

Either that, or shoddy coding.

I've noticed this on my CSM and DA codexes. It doesn't happen on my Tau codex or on the 7th edition rules. I sent an email to the Black a library to complain.

Check the file sizes. Does it normally happen with the bigger files?

Lol, hacked. Yes, it's a hack...they now have access to all your accounts and no amount of Google-Fu will save you. Your identity has been stolen. Dont worry though, I have the FBI on the line and they will guarantee you and your family into the witness protection program where you will be given a new identity and an unhackable version of ibook codex.

Seriously, it's a placeholder or broken thumbnail. Like "picture coming soon" or "image placeholder." Whoever was in charge of uploading the ebook and ensuring it was complete must have dropped the ball. Codemonkeys.

I'm done with ibooks codexs. Too bad I've already spent about $750 on them. I'll stick with what I've got, and anything new, I'll get in hard copy. At least with the hard copy, you can rely on things staying the way they are. New faults aren't going to appear inexplicably. And honestly, there are less mistakes in the hard copy. You should see the Space Wolves ibooks codex. Things spin the wrong way when you swipe at the 360 images. Apparently Njals staff is str2, and a Redeemer can carry 16 troops. The force requisition feature doesn't work properly (the WGT entry is bugged) and it gets corrupted so you have to uninstall iBooks and clear your cache then reinstall it to fix the problem. Which is a pain because then you have to reorganise your collection. On top of all that, many of the 'pop outs' are wrong. When you tap on heavy or special weapons it tells you what a heavy weapon is instead of listing the options and their points costs. Whew!

I heard back from Black Library, they are looking into it. I think it's more of an iOS 8 thing. A lot of apps when they're going to full screen will often get their splash screen momentarily switched to portrait from landscape and it will be stretched out. Happens in 40k Carnage (I know another GW product) and WarmaHordes War Room. That seems similar to what's happening in the codexes but in the apps instead of showing a placeholder, they are using the splash screen but futzing it.
As far as the file size goes, well the biggest thing on my iPad is the 7th edition rules and there is no problem with that. It might be parted up though. I don't know how iBooks get put together.

Yea I know right. I added it up when I was weighing up whether to switch back to hard copy. Seems I've gone too far. I have 11 codex's and supplements, the relevant Altar of Wars, 2 rulebooks (6th and 7th), and many dataslates and whatnot. It's worth having just for the digital only stuff like Kill Team, Carnage, and the Inquisition codex. But from on its hard copy for sure. At least they look at it a second (?) time before sending it to the printing press. The digital ones have to be just typed out and "we can update it later so no need to check it AT ALL", but they never do. The digital team is too small and taxed for time, so they only have time to work on the next new thing.

I just noticed a whole bunch of spelling errors in CSW. And Dreadnoughts now have a Sv instead of HP. Lol, a Sv of 3! Get a 4 and you fail the save and since you've got no HP, destroyed!
